"Key Frames: Automatic" in QuickTime Movie settings?

If I use the h.264 encoder in a quicktime movie, and bring up the video compression settings window, there's an option for keyframes. It can be set to every _ frames, all, or automatic. Does anyone have any idea what automatic does? Is it dependent on the frame rate (i.e. key frame every 30th frame at 30fps, and every 24th frame at 24fps)?

thanks for the help!

When set to Automatic, the H.264 compressor sets the keyframe interval to what ever it finds best for your content. I have not really been able to find more details about this.

I would recommend reading through Apple's tutorial on Creating Amazing Video Content with H.264.

Personally, I would have a look at Matrox MAX if I were to transcode a lot to H.264.

Good luck 🙂
