Battery problem

I have just replaced my old power adapter with a second hand one. When I plugged the new adapter in I noticed that that battery does not charge. There also is no orange or green light at the power inlet.
The battery is stone cold dead (Not even warming up) I notice that the new adaptor is A 2.65 whereas the old one is A 1.875. Both are 65W and by the way the new adapter works fine! Any advice?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.

When you look in your system profiler (click blue apple, about this mac, more info, power), does it show the power adapter attached? Does it say 65w? Does it say charging?

If no to those questions, then, assuming the battery is good, either the DC-in card or logic board is bad. Is the female plug in the Powerbook that the power adapter plugs into loose? Can you wiggle it - don't force it to check, just see if it's obviously loose. If so, replace the DC-in card. If not, the only other link in the charging circuit is the logic board. You might try substituting another known working battery before doing anything else.

The fact it isn't picking up the wattage of the charger says 1) the charger isn't really working or 2) the DC-in card isn't working or 3) the logic board isn't working, all which assume the battery is OK. If you know anyone with another Powerbook, you could hook your charger up to it to confirm it's working, and eliminate it as a problem. Unfortunately, there are no tests for the DC-in card and logic board. Assuming power adapter and battery are good, you'd replace the less expensive DC-in card and if that didn't fix it, replace the logic board.
