Boot Camp & Snow Leopard & Windows XP

I upgraded to Snow Leopard on an I-Mac. Also on my I-Mac is Windows XP pro with service pack 2. My understanding is that I need to upgrade Boot Camp to 2.1 so that I can install Windows Service Pack 3. The upgrade for Boot Camp 2.1 used to be an Apple download, but is no longer available. Although I see posts talking about Boot Camp 3.0, I cannot locate how to obtain it. So how do I go about getting the latest version of Boot Camp so I can install Windows SP3 for XP?

I-mac, Mac OS X (10.6), Windows XP

Hi and welcome to Discussions,

the 2.1 BootCamp Driver update is still there http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/bootcampupdate21 forwindowsxp.html

The 3.0 BootCamp Drivers are located on the OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD.
After the Windows installation simply insert the OSX Snow Leopard DVD and the driver setup/update usually starts automatically.

My personal upgrade path was (before Snow Leopard was released !): XP SP2 with BC Drivers 2.0 installed - then installed CD Driver Update 2.1 - then installed XP SP3 - the installed the BC 3.0 Drivers.

Hope it helps

Stefan

Thank you for the info.

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/bootcampupdate21 forwindowsxp.html is no longer available.
Apple now directs you to http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/bootcampupdate21 forwindowsvista32.html.

I downloaded it, but unable to get the update to run. Experienced the same problem when I downloaded the BC 2.1 update a week ago. Figuring I had done something wrong I trashed BC 2.1 upgrade.

Could the problem be that I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6 prior to updating Boot Camp 2.1? I sure would hate to have to go back to OS 10.5 and start all over.

Just checked and it works for me. Clicking on the 'Download' button I got the 'BCUpdateXP.exe' file (in OSX with Firefox).
You can use a USB-Stick to transfer the .exe file from OSX to use when in Windows XP.

The Vista 2.1 driver update only works with Vista not with XP.

I doubt that, since updating to SL 10.6 only updates OSX not anything on your BootCamp Windows XP partition.
For updating the BC Drivers to 3.0, as I posted, you have to use the SL 10.6 DVD while in Windows.

Might be a good time to do some backup of your Windows XP with WinClone http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/ and then update the BC Drivers to 3.0 (see above) and then add the SP3 update.

I appreciate your help. But I am sorry, but boot camp 2.1 is no longer available from apple's site. I used Firefox on OS 10.6. I get "Hmm, the page you are looking for cannot be found." Even captured a screen shot of it but cannot display it here.

The only download available for updating boot camp is for Vista. Have a screen shot of that page as will that I can e-mail you. Apple says it is recommended for those using Windows XP and Vista.

I get the same results accessing Apple's downloads using MS Explorer.

Please explain why I couldn't open or run either update of Boot Camp in Windows XP.

Hi David,

just checked with OSX 10.6.1 and the download works as well as before.

This is the direct download link http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=18808&cat=59&platfor m=osx&method=sa/BCUpdateXP.exe

Maybe it works.

I see the same text 'update recommended for Windows Xp and Vista user' but I think this refers in general to the 2.1 version.
The Driver update for Vista 32 is definitely not compatible with Windows XP !
That's why it won't work.

Ok, I downloaded the link you provided:
This is the direct download link http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=18808&cat=59&platfor m=osx&method=sa/BCUpdateXP.exe

I did it using Firefox and 10.6.1 as well as Windows XP. When I transferred it to windows, it showed up as BCupdate for Visa. When I down loaded it in windows it showed up as bootcamp up date for Visa.

I CAN understand why I cannot open BCupdateXP.exe running XP rather than Vista. What I do not understand is that a week ago when BCupdate2.1 was available from Apple and I downloaded it. Unfortunately, I could NOT open or run the program with Windows XP professional. After trying numerous times, I trashed it.

There has to be a reason why Apple removed the BCupdate2.1. Likewise there has to be a reason Apple says: "This update addresses issues and improves compatibility with Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Vista running on a Mac computer using Boot Camp. It is highly recommended for all Boot Camp users running 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista."

Likewise there has to be a reason why I couldn't open or run either BCupdate2.1 or BCupdateVisa.

It gives me a BCupdateXP.exe file of 220.724 kb size. And it works (dl in XP SP3 with FireFox 3.5.3).

I must admit I am out of ideas. I really can't say why it works for me and doesn't work for you.
I assume that you are running with Administrator rights when doing/trying all this.

There has to be a reason why Apple removed the BCupdate2.1. Likewise there has to be a reason Apple says: "This update addresses issues and improves compatibility with Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Vista running on a Mac computer using Boot Camp. Like said, to me the BCUpdateXP is not removed, but still there. And the Vista one as well (though I haven't touced it, since I don't have Vista).
And the mentioning of XP with the Vista update is to me a mere general information for the 2.1 updates in general.

Likewise there has to be a reason why I couldn't open or run either BCupdate2.1 or BCupdateVisa.
