More hidden contacts

I have hidden contacts on my iPhone. They do not appear anywhere in my contact directory (set to 'all contacts'), but do get displayed when that person calls, or if I 'favorite' that contact. They will also appear in my recent call list, as well as in my search results, if I search for that name or number. It's displayed as a contact file (in the search results), and is permanently on my phone, but doesn't sync to iTunes and is not accessible through the main contact list.

Any ideas? I've had this problem since I upgraded to the 3GS. Surprising glitch in an otherwise somewhat streamlined design...

Exactly the same here. It happens when I receive a contact by SMS from somebody else, and click "create new contact". It doesn't appear in the contacts list, doesn't sync with my computer, but is a searchable and usable contact. It's even got a little contact icon next to it in the search field.

I sync via MobileMe, but I can't see that being the problem as the contact doesn't appear on the phone list in the first place; the only other thing I can think of is that the numbers were sent with +44 - ie international dialing prefixes. Maybe it doesn't like them? Editing them out hasn't made a difference though. Does anybody have any ideas?

Sounds like we're at the mercy of Apple releasing a fix...

I've restored, synced, etc - the works - it still remains.

Sleddy: I doubt your country code or even it being an SMS-related contact has any effect on the bug. I run into the same thing though: basically any incoming call that I 'create contact' for ends up in this iPhone contact-limbo ...

Having exactly the same problem on my iPhone.

Contacts added to iPhone from SMS messages, map searches, etc. immediately "disappear" from the contacts list but can still be found in recents, favourites, using search, etc.

Not disastrous but incredibly annoying to have contacts all over the device rather than consolidated into a single list.

Considering wiping and restoring but keen to save these hidden contacts first before doing so, as they're not synced into MobileMe or Mac Address Book, presumably because they don't exist in the iPhone's Contacts list.

Any ideas on how I can do a full back-up of the iPhone to include these hidden contacts before restoring?

Otherwise, I guess as Preston says, we're at the mercy of Apple releasing a fix, hopefully sooner rather than later. Adding it to my Christmas wish list, fingers crossed!

I had this problem when saving missed calls (ie creating new contact from a missed call). Turns out it was to do with mobile me so I turned off contacts on iphone / mobile me (choosing to delete contacts on phone) then was left with the rogue numbers. THen turned back on push contacts and chose to merge. Problem solved.

(obviously won't help if you don't have mobileme!)

yeah the same thing happened to me after i used the 'BUMP' app yesterday. It removed a contact i have on my phone (i was trying to add more of my friend's info), and the only way i can see it is through Messages, if i search for it, or if i add it to my favorites. It is completely gone from the contacts now.

very weird glitch, has anyone found a fix yet?

After emailing those "RogueContacts" to myself on a bi monthly basis... I just had this epiphany this morning. Thought I would share only to find out that you beat me to it. What happens though when we stop using mobileme. Will the same concept work for syncing via cable? (Turn off contact syncing, turn it back on choose to merge) If so I think that's the short term solution for all the others here, however I can't understand how apple could let this continue for as long as it has.

Oh and you don't have to choose to delete them if you don't want to. If you choose to keep them. You have a list in groups called On Iphone that will include the "Roque Contacts", where as before that list didn't exist and they weren't included in any other list. Once that's done, you can go to the bottom of your contact list on your iPhone, it tells you how many contacts at the very bottom. Then compare that number to your contacts on your computer. I had 411 on my iPhone, and 407 on my computers contacts. So you can imagine I was not going to scroll through and find the Rogues, as that would be time consuming. The contacts sync off, on, merge trick worked like a charm... via mobileme. Someone let us know if it works via the cable sync method.
