Q: iCal Stuck in Unusable State after Changing Google Account Password

Hello,

I use iCal and Google Calendar using the WebDAV support for syncing the two. When I started using iCal, I set up my Google Calendar account in iCal's preferences, and all was hunky-dory.

Recently, I changed the password to my google account. As expected, the next time I started iCal, it was unable to connect because it did not have the correct password stored. This is where the problems begin.

Whenever iCal is opened, it gets stuck in a loop with two display dialogs. The first reads.

"The server responded with an error.
The server did not recognize your user name or password for account "<myaccount@gmail.com>." Make sure you enter them correctly."
And gives me two options to "Go Offline" or "Revert to Server"

If I choose "Go Offline" from this dialog, I am simply presented again with the same dialog with the same options.

If I choose "Revert to Server" I am presented with a second dialog that reads:

"The server responded with an error.
The server did not recognize your user name or password for account "<myaccount@gmail.com>." Make sure you enter them correctly."
And only gives me the option to choose "OK".

After clicking OK, I am returned to the first dialog box.

Unfortunately, these dialogs lock me out of the preferences dialog for iCal where I could change the account password.

Any help in either accessing the preferences, editing the password from outside of iCal, or simply resetting all application data for iCal so that I could resync all my calendars from the server would be great.

Legendcox's Keychain Access walkthrough totally worked.  Thanks for that.  I had been banging my head against a wall until I did that.

The simple fix!  The go offline for a while and go online did it.  THANK YOU!

FWIW, I had a similar problem and solution. However -- I tried deleting the Google Keychain items (and running Keychain First Aid which is sometimes helpful). I did not want ot reset my entire Keychain for obvious reasons. This did not work. (Steps: Quit iCal. Load Keychain Access. Search for gmail. Delete entries that come up. Reload iCal.  Take account online.)

What did work was simpler -- I put in a blank password, closed the box, went through the warnings, then put in the right password, closed the box, and hit Refresh. Magically everything was fine.

I did NOT change my iCal or Google password, by the way, anywhere along the line -- the problem appeared suddenly and for no apparent reason.

I also fixed this problem by modifying my keychain:

In keychain I searched for "google" and found two items for www.google.com labeled as internet password. I deleted those two items, then returned to iCal Preferences > Accounts and retyped my Google password.

    Fixed my problem!

The only fix that worked for me as to reset my keychain.  There's an earlier post with instructions.  Once I reset the keychain, it all flowed smoothly.

Nice to see that over two years later, this glitch still hasn't been fixed, Apple.

From another user. THIS WORKED FOR ME. SOOOOOOO SIMPLE!

    Try this.

    Open ICAL.

    Go to preferences.

    Go to Accounts.

Your old password should appear there.

Change the password to the new password.

    Close ICal, and restart.

I had the same problem all day today.

Realized that ICAL stores your email password.

If I find anything else out I will post it here.

Thanks for the comment but that solution does not actually work. iCal launches a modal box telling you the password is incorrect. The window has an OK button, but when you click it, the window just pops back up again. You cannot enter any data in the accounts screen while the window is there.

I did have to hit the ok button but after putting in the correct password everything worked for me as did others in this discussion. I do believe apple should look into this as it has happened to people who did NOT change their password. goodluck

"I do believe apple should look into this as it has happened to people who did NOT change their password"

Yup, that's me. I was stuck in a loop where I couldn't even close iCal down, I just moved instantly from one error message to the next. Eventually took the machine off the network which allowed me to shut iCal. The error returned next time I fired it up and again, I had to come off the network to shut the nonsense down.

So this is an error that is AT LEAST two years old and Apple haven't bothered to fix it. I bought a Macbook Air in September of 2011. By January 2012 it had required a rebuild twice and died entirely twice. Once recoverable, the second time was terminal and required major surgury by Apple. I was not surprisingly not happy, so Apple agreed to swap it for a new one. I told them I'd take the data off the old one. This was the now newly repaired machine. I got an external hard drive but without even leaving the store, it died again (I'm so glad I hadn't gone home with it!) The guys in the store helped me transfer using a Thunderbolt cable directly. A couple of weeks in, and the power supply is flickering. It's still charging but will go back because it clearly isn't going to last.

Preview, which I used a lot on my old white Macbook for years, doesn't work properly on Tiger (on either Macbook Air #1 or #2). Now this on my 27" iMac? And hardware issues on a £1,300+ machine?

Ah well, I've tried all the fixes mentioned above, I'll add iCal to Preview in the list of software that doesn't work. Do I still recommend other people buy a Mac?

Here's how I fixed the problem with iCal after changing my google password.  I took my mac off line and then opened iCal.  I was then able to change the password through Preferences.  Put the mac back on the internet and the problem was solved.
