Spotlight constantly indexing.

Spotlight is constantly indexing. I also have the spinning delay wheel whenever I try to do anything. No estimated time to completion is given.; I just have moving blue and white stripped line.

Did several searches and as a result I blocked my external Time Machine drive from being indexed, emptied trash and restarted the computer. Still have the same problem.

This problem is new. It started after I did my upgrade to Snow Leopard.

iMac 2.93 GHz, 640GB HD, 2TB External HD, 4 GB Ram, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Some process might be modifying certain files and forcing Leopard to update its index.

Try unchecking categories in Spotlight pref pane one-by-one and for each one give it some time to see if Spotlight stops indexing.

Personally, after upgrading to SL, it started indexing my external drive, which it never did before. However, it was over within a reasonable time and hasn't bothered me ever since.

I unchecked all categories, rebooted the system twice and have disconnected the Time Machine (external hard disk).

My iMac is so slow that I'm now using my eight year old Windows XP machine for most things because its faster.

I guess the only thing left to do is take it in for repair.

Try the following in a Terminal session...

sudo mdutil -i off /
sudo mdutil -E /
sudo mdutil -i on /
sudo mdutil -s /

These commands will disable Spotlight, erase the index then turn it
back on. The "-s" will show the status.

I did that but still have the problem.

I talked with Apple Support and have deleted all of the caches, re-configured the items indexed, disconnected all external drives, and re-installed Snow Leopard.

The problem still exists. Apple has raised my support to the second level but the problem remains.

I'll post the fix when we find it.

I am having a similar problem. Spotlight gets to the stage where it says "Indexing <hostname>... About 46 hours remaining" in the spotlight window but then gives up after filling the disk (i.e. 'du -h' in /.Spotlight-V100 returns 18GB).

- deleting the index with 'mdutil -E /' does not help
- disconnecting network drives does not help
- deselecting ALL the 'categories' in the spotlight preferences does not help
- disk utility lists the permissions ok and the disk is fine
- checking the disk with disk warrior indicates no troubles with folders/files/hardware.
- no messages for mds/mdworker in syslog until the running low on disk space warning and abort

Apple support had me do a complete removal and re-install. I had a time machine backup but that didn't work properly so I've been spending the past months getting my system working properly.

What a pain. At least the system is working ... finally.

I have an 8 TB RAID array (only 1.8TB used so far). Recently did a clean install of Snow Leopard from scratch and then reinstalled all of my programs followed by all of my data. Everything went fine.

However, for nearly two weeks now, MDS has been working overtime (as much as 80% in Activity Monitor) while my hard drives THRASH back and forth from all the indexing. Spotlight says its done, but my computer tells me otherwise.

Have read most of the posts here. Have stopped indexing, erased and rebuilt, restarted, etc. I think its getting hung up on a particular set of files or on a particular area of the volume.

My question is how do I tell where the indexing process is getting hung up at (if it is). I really don't think it should take two weeks to index 1.5 TBs.
