Remote Screen Sharing

Hello,

I'm having trouble initiating Screen Sharing remotely. I have been using VPN for remotely accessing shared files on the server and now I would like to be able to initiate remote screen sharing for a client computer with local IP 192.168.1.115 (I need to be able to monitor some ongoing processes from home).

I realize this would likely be easier with Apple Remote Desktop, but I don't need all those feature, and frankly, would rather not shell out for it if I don't need to!

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!

Hi

Have you enabled the Setting in the Sharing Preferences Pane on the remote mac yet? Have you also enabled Remote Login (ssh)? If you've enabled ssh but not Remote Management then you can use the kickstart command after first opening an ssh connection:

ssh admin@192.168.115

Supply the admin password when prompted. You can do this using VPN. Once you're logged in issue this command:

sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -activate -configure -access -on -restart -agent -privs -all

The above command is all on one line. Again supply the password when prompted. Once you're done close the connection, select Connect to Server from the Go Menu and key in: vnc://192.168.1.115 and supply the remote client's admin name and password. Hopefully you should be looking at the desktop.

Beyond this the only other option I know of is to go to the remote location, log in locally and define the appropriate settings in the Sharing Preferences Pane.

A couple of things..

1) You say trouble but don't explain what happens.. Can you SSH into the server and watch the logs at the same time you try the screensharing??

2) Do you have anything in the logs thus far??

3) Do you have the appropriate port open on the firewall??

4) Have you considered doing a ssh tunnel??? Connect using ssh and direct the screensharing over the ssh connection.. Very common... Used in the jaadu iphone app as an example..

I am having a similar problem with screen sharing. When I attempt to connect via the server admin application, I receive the prompt for userid and password, but the authentication fails.

Checking the screen sharing services, it is noted as being controlled by Remote Management Service.
I have SSH and Remote Management enable.

If I disable the remote management service, and re-enable the service through system preferences, screen sharing works fine.

I have checked the user entry in open directory and the user is in the administrator group and the screen sharing group is listed as an inherited group.

Any ideas on where the authentication is failing? No error messages are appearing on the console log when attempting to connect.

Side note: The server is running 10.5.8, the client is running 10.6.
