When attempting to diagnose problems or offer advice, it helps greatly if the person asking for help would supply as much detail as possible. We are not mind readers and are not there looking over your shoulder. Please provide details about your "deck" and your Mac system as you can (including how they're connected). Also let us know what video format you're working with in FCP.
Thanks, my first post.
OK, the deck is a Sony DVCAM.
I am using Final Cut Express on a MacBookPro 10.4.11
I have a firewire cable connecting the two. (I also tried using my Panasonic DVX 100B camera with the same result - audio but no video).
I chose Refresh Video Devices
Clicked on the timeline, then Print to video.
I gave it 6 seconds of color bars, then when it said it was 'ready, I hit return and the deck began to record.
I cannot see any video on my monitor, (or int he camera screen), but I do see the audio meters moving. During playback the audio is there but no video.
Thanks for any help/suggestions. Very much appreciated.

I have also done this thanks to a response to another post for print
to video issues:
- Trash your preferences, reboot, and launch the application, set the correct DV setting, and see what happens. I went hee for those instructions:

Still I get audio but no video - still searching for a resolution to this problem.
Thanks for anyone who can help.

Have you tried a different cable? Please be exact. What deck is this? Sony makes thousands of products, many, many of them support DVCAM. Does the sequence appear on the external monitor when you play back the sequence? Is the sequence fully rendered?
Interesting - I was just reading your bio here
http://www.fcpbook.com/Who.html when you replied.
I have the Sony DSR-40 DVCam deck.
Am using input select: input DV setting
I do not see the sequence in the external monitor or when I use my camera for output. I see the words Video Marker on the black screen.
Yes, I have fully rendered the sequence.
I will try another firewire cable.
thanks for your reply.
