No Java compiler installed on this system

I have been getting an error in the Xcode console when I try to build and debug a java class. it says, $i686-apple-darwin10-gcc-4.2.1: JavaTest.jar: Java compiler not installed on this system

Can anyone shed some light on this? I do have gcc, like everyone else, and can get all of the compiling abilities of the command line in both X11 and Terminal. Xcode and OS 10.6.1 are up to date.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.1), 1.83G, 2G ram, 60G hd
