I've had my iPhone for 2 weeks and updated to the latest firmware version as soon as it came out. I've had 3 occasions where I have taken my iPhone out of my pocket to find that it's powered itself off. It doesn't appear to have locked up as it powers on as normal. The battery is always fully or well charged.
I live in Sweden and I also have the same problem that I think all off you have.
I bought it with the 3.1.2 version preinstalled and it shuts down randomly. From twice a day to "only" 1 time weekly. It's very anoying and frustrating. I've tried to find some kind of information about this issue but no one seems to know about the problem. Or are Apple just not wanting any bad publicity?
Anyhow. I've both been in contact with the store that I bought it in and Swedens biggest mobilcompany, Telia (It's like AT&T in the US) but they wont realy help me. My worries are that if I'll send it to service it will take me 2 weeks and they won't done anything beside restoring it (that I've already tried X times).
Can apple.com give me a new phone? Anyone knows?
So what to do? Apple, hallo?!
Shall we just wait and have to live with interoupt telephone calls when the phone just dies or when we put it in our jeans for hours to see that it later on is turned of?
I'm experiencing the same problems since last week. Today i found out why: My iPhone keeps crashing (battery level drops to zero, then reboot) when it's resting in my Just Mobile Xtand. This Stand consists of aluminum. Strangely, this happens only when the iPhone is connected via edge.
Any ideas? I can reproduce this - when i put it in the stand and start using an app which accesses the internet, it will crash after one or two minutes. When i just lay it down on the desk, nothing happens. It seems that the radiation produced by the phone interferes with the aluminum stand - maybe it induces an magnetic field which disturbs parts of the iPhone?
Got the same problem here in Berlin, resetting it "helps" for like a week, then the random shut downs start over. Especially the Skype app seems to trigger these shutdowns, which is why my guess is also that heavy wifi/edge/3g usage causes them.
I just went on vacation for 2 weeks and had my iPhone 3GS in flight mode for the whole time, watching videos, listening to music using basically all the apps but not the phones "connections"... Not a single shut down. I thought the problem had gone away, but it was back when back in Germany and using it to skype/make calls/surf again.
I have had the daily random shutdowns for months.
Went to Taiwan from UK with work recently for 2 weeks without one single shutdown, thought it had gone away. Returned to Uk, shutdowns started again.
Hoped it would be fixed with latest update, but no luck.
Took it to Apple store last year and they just said the phone is "confused" and that I need to re-start it every few days myself, what a load of nonsense, anyway it didn't work, neither did the restore they suggested.
So what now?
Will Apple exchange it without me spending all day at the shop waiting for it to shut down to prove it?
I have been getting the random shutdowns and they always happen when it is in my holster. And it will not come back on until I plug it in for a few minutes and then do a soft reset. The battery is always at least 50%. I upgraded to 3.1.3 this past weekend. I have a 3G that is 15 months old and I can't upgrade until May. If anyone has a solution, please pass it along. Where is Apple on this situation?
I too have been having this issue, i did start a post about it last year at some point.
The handset can go for days without a shut down, then do it a couple of times in a day... as some of you have seen, this still happens on 3.1.3... although it doesn't help us, its nice to know it's not just me, i was about to jump ship and get an HTC.
My 3GS will shut down with or without push turned on and i have tried everything... i work for a cell phone company and sell the iPhone, but i can't figure it out... very annoying.
I have the same problem as long as Fraud Protection in Safari is enabled.
Test: OS Language EN - Fraud Protection on - Shut down ( average every 2 Days )

PS: I do not recommend this phone for business use !!!!
I tried to restore the phone without reinstalling my downloaded apps and the shutdown problem stopped. Then I put back all the apps and the problem returned.
I dont know which app might be involved. I had a lot of apps installed. I've restored again and the problem is gone. I'll slowly add the apps back 1 by 1 to see what happens.
For now the problem is gone. Before the restore I was convinced it was hardware problem. The iphone got so unstable I could force a shutdown just by pressing the volume bar.
Ah, so i am not the only one. I just asked a question on this forum with the same problems and i see it is quite common. I have tried turning off push email and i will see where that takes me as that was recommended by someone. I agree it might be an applications thing because when there are no programs, it does not seem to happen. When i put my programs, it happens. Maybe it's an idea to share what programs we have on.
here's a list of mine:
evernote, ping, AED dictionary, wikiamo, icabmobile, whatsapp, faces lite, sky news, sky sports, arsenal, eurosport, news stand feed, beejiveIM,skype, shrek karting, flight track, worldmate.
If we have some in common let us share that knowledge.
Nope, turning push email off did not help. Mine seems to be restarting quite often now, i guess it is that the more programs you have on, the more it happens.
The case has nothing to do with it. I'm on my 4th iphone, all with the same problem, and I haven't had a case until this one. Phone works fine for a few months, then begins turning itself off oand on. Power drains in hours. I've been told by Apple that it's hardware, then software, then that it was caused by my car charger (which I haven't used at all with this current phone). I think Apple has no idea what is causing this problem.
I also thought it was my apps, so I took them all off and still had the problem. I've also deleted all e-mail thinking I had a virus. Still had the problem. I stopped sincing my phone for a month (I have a mobile calendaring and e-mail service) and still had the problem. My phone has been replaced 3 times by Apple. I thought the problem was cured this last time because the phone behaved for a few months. I did absolutely nothing different. Last night, the "new" phone started up again.
Does anyone have any ideas? I love my iphone and don't want to have to give it up.
