I've had my iPhone for 2 weeks and updated to the latest firmware version as soon as it came out. I've had 3 occasions where I have taken my iPhone out of my pocket to find that it's powered itself off. It doesn't appear to have locked up as it powers on as normal. The battery is always fully or well charged.
I too have had this happen. I assume its an issue with the firmware update (my iPhone is less then a week old so I doubt very much it's a faulty battery). It seems to be in regard to the batter meter however. Just now it turned itself off (the battery was 90%) and turning it back on the battery read 100%.
The only other explanation I can think of is that I might have an app that's running in the background doing this. But it's never shut down when in any third-party apps, just in mail, messages or the home screen.
I'm blaming the new OS. Heaps of people have reported battery issues (in terms of lifespan etc) and shutdowns after the upgrade. Any suggestions? Should we strip back to the previous OS? And how is that achieved?
I've had this problem a lot. From trying different things, it only seems to happen to me when I have PUSH enabled for my email. When I turn off PUSH, and use FETCH, it's ok.
Are you also using PUSH?
Hello
First, sorry for my english... but i'm french!
I also have the same big problem with my iphone since I updated to 3.1.2.
So I don't know what I have to do??
do you think that it is a problem with the new OS?
Do you think that apple will do something to help us or do you think that it is better for me to send it back to get a new one??
Thanks in advance for your help and advice!!
same problem, i just bought a phone a few days ago from Hong Kong, came out of the box with 3.1.2 already installed ---- it starts shutting off on random occasions, sometimes when im using the map, sometimes when im not using it at all, it's shut off every night since i bought it, which makes the alarm clock useless if the phone is off! when i caught it happening before, i would be using it and suddenly you see the round waiting circle appear and the phone just goes blank after a few seconds (powered down). you'd have to press the power button to relaunch and you see the apple logo.
any updates on this issue? apparently 3.1.2 is still having the same shutdown problem.
Yesterday got a replacement iPhone 3GS (2nd replacement in a week) and on day 1 had 3 random shutdowns. I did a clean restore and now just had another shutdown.
Is this a known OS 3.1.2 bug? Any use to go back to Apple with this?
As I said, my phone is a 3 day old replacement for a faulty handset I had previously. I have contacted Apple Care yesterday who recommended me to again to perform a clean restore. Unfortunately my phone did still self-shutdown once.
Has anyone tried anything else to correct this problem?
I really don't want to move onto my 4th iPhone 3GS!
Same problem with my 3GS 32gb, running 3.1.2, the phone will just turn itself off for no reason. Pressing the home button turns it on again but it does mean that I cannot trust the phone for anything. I have missed countless phone calls because of this problem.
I'm having the same problem. My iPhone keeps shutting off at random times. Incredibly frustrating, and I hope Apple posts a fix soon. Did I mention it's incredibly frustrating, as well as being horribly bad PR for the iPhone?
Mine too.
About 6 times a day powers off for no reason.
Also occasionally battery shows 100% then drops to less than 20%.
I hope this is a update fault and not hardware.
Anybody at Apple going to take note of this ?
I called Apple Care today and they have advised me to get the iPhone checked at an Apple Store and probably get yet another exchange.
Regards to the battery - I have noticed some odd things too. The first time I charged the phone, initially the charge was around 70%, within 5 minutes the charge went up to 100%. When I disconnected the power source, the phone still thought it was connected to a source.
After 2 clean restores, I noticed today after work that before I connected the phone to the power source, the battery was at 55%, and after connection, immediately it went down to 18%!
Perhaps the self-shutdown issue is to do with problems with the battery?
