Connect iPhone to other bluetooth device

I have a bluetooth device and I want my iPhone (3GS) to connect with it and transfer data.Is it possible?
After turning ON bluetooth, my iPhone just keeps searching and cannot find any device

What is iPhone OS accessory? Can it be useful in above case?

Mac Mini, iPhone OS 3.0

By file transfer I mean some data transfer, not music/ audio/video file transfer.

Like on Windows mobile we can do serial port communication with bluetooth device and can send information from device to phone(By writing my own custom application).
Is it possible on iPhone?
I want to write my own application on iPhone which can do this kind of communication, is it possible?

No it is not because you cannot do file transfer. You can only use the profiles you were already provided. And a music "file" is the same as a date "file".

It does use the PAN (Personal Area Network) profile, which is what game apps and a photo app is using to exchange information. You could explore that profile within the SDK and see if it will provide you with the functionality you need.
