Rosetta download link?

I've searched everywhere and can't find it.

My laptop doesn't have a functioning DVD so I can't use the install disk and I can't use my Epson printer because it requires Rosetta and it's not installed. Theoretically my powerbook should prompt me if it needs Rosetta and then when I say "yes" it will download it from Apples servers - the trouble is that it doesn't know I need Rosetta for my Epson driver so it doesn't prompt and so I can't get the link.

I've searched high and low for a link and can't find one.

17 unibody, Mac OS X (10.6.1), without a working DVD...

Hello Gregor:

As I recall, Rosetta was part of the OS X 10.6 install software. In my own case, I was prompted to install it. I ignored the prompt, but it returned later.

I saw another post that indicated the person searched high and low but could not find an independent Rosetta download.

I do not have an Epson printer, so I am no help there.

Hi Barry,

Yes, 10.6.1 is installed but Rosetta doesn't install automatically by default - it either has to be installed manually from your install discs or a program that needs it will prompt your machine to download it from the Apple servers. In my case the Epson software drivers don't prompt that they need Rosetta but the Epson site states that they do. Without a DVD reader you think it would be easy to find a download link since it is certainly available to download.

But it's not easy...

Hi again:

You are right, it is not easy. You seem to be caught in a catch-22.

I hunted around myself, but this is the only guidance I could find (and I think you already know this):

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/27987.html

It is a stab in the dark, but you might try deleting the printer, restarting, and then adding it back in.

Barry

P.S. You seem to have researched things, but I thought I would include this link:

Thanks for the links but it didn't help. I tried installing it over the network from my studio tower but even with both Optional Installs packages on my desktop the install fails at the end. I suppose I could just buy an optional DVD drive and then install it or I might try installing the Mac the Ripper to see if that prompts it. I've already tried deinstalling the Epson stuff...

just follow dbsneddon's suggestion. all you need is to run any PPC program once and SL will prompt you to download Rosetta. you can try MactheRipper as suggested or something smaller, like any old automator or applescript created app. they are all PPC code. for example, download this automator action
http://automator.us/stopemptyinput1-0.zip
and start the installer. you don't even need to finish the install as the installer itself is PPC.
However, I'm puzzled by your assertion that your printer needs Rosetta. how d you know this? It would have prompted you to download Rosetta if that were the case.

So I tried to use Remote Install which should work but that didn't work. I tried downloading the link and Mac the Ripper and both installed without prompting me to download Rosetta which begs the question - is Rosetta already installed? My printer isn't working which tells me it isn't but is there a way to check?

In the mean time I'm making a disc image of the Snow Leopard disk on a jump drive and will try that...

can you start MactheRipper or the automator action I mentioned? if you can Rosetta must be installed already. you can also look in Activity monitor when those programs are running and check what kind of processes they are in the "kind" column. if it says PowerPC anywhere then Rosetta is installed. I just tried it with the installer for that automator action and it shows it as PowerPC. In this case your problem is not with Rosetta.
