Apple ID/password and iTunes ID/password

Are the Apple ID and password identical to the iTunes Account ID and password? It seems that I can only log in to Apple Discussions if I use my iTunes ID and password or vice versa. No matter how many times I try to change one of the passwords, I get a message that my password is entered wrong. Can anyone clarify this for me. Thank you.
