Can't find custom ringtone on phone!

Hello,

I created a ringtone in Garageband, "shared" it as a ringtone to itunes, synced to phone, see this ringtone under "ringtones" on the iphone in itunes when the phone is connected, but cannot find it or use it on the actual phone.
I have tried several times by re-syncing but no luck. All I see are the original ringtones that came with the phone.

Help please

Thx

Jim

Yes it is shorter than 40 secs. Also, the ringtone list on the phone is just 1 list. At the top is the default and there is only 1. The rest is 1 list and all of them are what came with phone.

Yes I checked " sync".

????

It sounds like you are doing everything that you need to do here. Could be that the export from GarageBand to iTunes could be dropping the ball for you.

Try this -
1. Instead of exporting to iTunes from GB directly, save it on your desktop as an mp3 file (or export from GB as an mp3 on your desktop).
2. Import the mp3 into iTunes as you would normally do to add a song
3. Right click the imported mp3 and convert it to the AAC format
4. Now export the AAC format file to your desktop
5. Change the extension of the file to .m4r
6. Double-click the .m4r file from desktop so that it gets imported back into iTunes but this time as a ringtone
7. See if it appears under the ringtones section under iPhone in iTunes and then sync it from there. Give another name to your workaround project so that the iPhone does not get confused...

Good luck.

Hi,

I have a Mac so I cant right click and cannot find a way to convert file.

It IS in my itunes as a ringtone but will not sync to phone. I cannot drag and drop either but can with songs.

When I click on the phone device in itunes and get the tabs on the top, I go to ringtones. If I check the sync ringtones box a window opens stating that if I do sync ringtones all of my music and videos on the phone will be removed. Why is this? I did it with my wife's phone because she only had a couple songs on hers but I do not want to wipe all of my songs off. Is this the only way? I don't even need the ringtone on my phone but I am trying to figure out what to do so i can do it on my wife's phone.

This is getting very frustrating considering all I want to do is add 1 small ringtone.

Highlight the file in iTunes and open "get info" by cmd+click or right click>>get info.
Make sure that the extension of the file is .m4r

Since you are not able to drag it out of iTunes on your desktop, it tells me that the extension could be something else other than what it should be i.e. .m4r. Also, hence, when you try to add it to your iPhone the file is being treated as a music file thereby trying to replace what you have in your music section of your iPhone.

If the file extension is not .m4r, this is what you need to do -

1. Locate the file on your macintosh hard drive for this -
2. Click your finder>>music>>iTunes>>iTunes music and then look for a folder called Unknown.
Note - If your iTunes library is not "clean" with random songs without artists, albums, etc. you might have more than one folders by name "Unknown" or some variant of it. So look around and locate the file on the hard drive.
3. Drag it out on your desktop
4. Right click and change the extension to .m4r
5. Save and double click so that it gets imported back into iTunes and starts playing too on your mac
6. You will find it under Ringtones. Sync in back on your iPhone.

Hopefully it will go well for you this time around.

It is the correct file (m4r). I see it in my itunes under ringtones and it plays there but when I drag and drop to my phone ringtones it will not do it.
I do not want to check the box to sync ringtones because it states that I will lose all music and video. Is this true and is this the only way to get to phone? When I tried yesterday on my wife's phone, it wiped out her music and DIDNOT sync the ringtone.

Thx

Well, it is not designed to be like that - and I do not have any such issue. And I have created ringtones from songs I have bought on iTunes and also have imported ringtones that I created in the Garage Band.

Not sure what's going on in your case.. Sorry!

MAC's do have "right" click 🙂

either by holding the Control key and then hitton a mouse button...or if you have a mighty or new magic mouse...goto System Preferences and then Mouse and you can set the mouse to have a right click just like you were used to on PC

For your issue...If it's correctly an .mr4 and you have chosen to manage music manually then the drag drop should be working...

However, if you do not sync manually then then way the ringtones get added to iPhone is by going to the Ringtone tab at the top of iTunes when the iPhone is synced and then making sure that tone is chosen to be synced to iPhone...then hit sync for it to be added.

Ok, can't explain it but I was finally able to get it done. I just deleted the file on her itunes/iphone and grabbed it off the desktop again. Dragged it right to the phone and it took!

Who knows whether it was me or a glitch but it worked.

**I did not have to use the ringtone tab in itunes!!!

Thanks everyone for sticking with me and offering advice.

Take care

Jim
