60i footage to 24p

Please understand that i am a rookie.

I have read other posts but i am a little confused. I am recording some footage in 24p, but it really records it in 60i. i=interlaced so the picture is not really progressive right? I am using a Canon HF S10.

So I log and transfer and it brings it in to FCP at ( 29.97/Apple Pro Res 422/Square Pix ) in its own clip. I did not see a way to change that.

I import to the new sequence, say yes to change settings. Changes to ( 1920x1080/HDTV 1080i (16x9)/Odd Field Dominace/29.97 Edit TimeBase/Apple ProRes 422).

I export with current settings. Open with quicktime and there is interlaced video. I export with Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24p, there are interlaced lines and in some areas looks worse.

My final plan is to record to Blu-Ray in 24p, and also export the best possible dvd.

What tricks do i need to do so that I get the 60i footage to 24p into Final Cut Pro for editing, and make sure i export that way?

Also i know that Apple Pro Res is awsome to work with, but it requires alot of space. What is the next down version that i could use that will still produce good quality DVDs.

Two words:

Cinema Tools.

Cinema Tools will remove the pulldown which is there to bring the 24fps material up to 30.

You need to tell it which frame is which in the sequence, but that's not too tough - just read the manual.

If the HF10 and the HV20 both use the same 24p in 60i scheme, this, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2410 may be worth a try.

I'm going to recommend against using Cinema Tools actually....

Inside of Compressor you can create a preset that will use Frame Controls and "Remove Telecine" and transcode the files into the codec of your choice. In my case I use ProRes 422 LT (I have FCS 3). I created a droplet with this preset which allows me to simply drag and drop the files onto the droplet and remove the extra frames.

The reason I recommend this over Cinema Tools is that it (1) automatically detects what the pulldown pattern is (2) the ability to create a droplet which is easier that using Cinema Tool's batch feature.

I am still a little confused. Would I do this before I bring it into FCP, or after? Do i use Cinema Tools stand alone, or within FCP. I have searched the internet up and down, still with no luck on Cinema Tools tutorials. Do you know where I can find any?

I don't know of any Cinema Tools tutorials. I just read the manual and used it.

And while I have generally modified the clips, then loaded them into FCP, Cinema Tools access is integrated into FCP and you can activate it from within...

Thank you all for your imput. It was very helpful. I have decided to go with Voltaic. They just upgraded to v.2 and it export the AVCHD to 23.98, Apple Intermediate, 1920x1080. Its pretty easy and that was the final tie-braker, and $35 is not bad.
