Flash video causing 105% CPU usage spikes

Just got my 27" iMac plugged in (not quad core) software updated it, installed the latest flash player, and I go to youtube and all the videos play really jerky, with sound popping and stuff. So i opened activity monitor and flash player (only thing not running 64bit) is spiking to 105% CPU usage every few seconds. Its straight out of the box, haven't even installed a single app on it yet.

Anyone else having this issue?

iMac 27", Mac OS X (10.6.1)

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...

Bear with me here... you may have downloaded a corrupted file for Flash... try this. Uninstall the Flash plugin and reinstall a fresh copy.

When you are finished uninstalling the old Flash plugin, go here and install a fresh copy
of Flash Player plugin.

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

As with any software installations, repair disk permissions.

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

I don't know about a permanent solution, but I do know a good fix for now (for youtube flash videos mostly) until apple takes care of it. There is an application called click2flash which replaces the default flash youtube player with one that plays the H.264 version of the file. It takes a tiny bit longer to load videos, on my MBP on wifi at least, but it won't make a dent on your CPU. Hope this helps all the youtubers with this issue.

I'm having the same slowness issues even if I don't play any Flash video. Firefox starts using all the CPU's power (100%) from one core. Doing anything within the browser creeps and is very sluggish.

The only why I found to temporary resolve the issue is to either restart or have the system sleep by pushing the power button.

This is a problem that Apple should be looking at ASAP. Lets hope they are.

Hi all, I am having the same problems.. thought it rather weird to be experiencing so much slowness with a brand new Mac. Kind of got me upset at spending so much.

Purchased in France at an APR Store
Bought my new 27" Core 2 duo, 48 hours ago. Updated everything, build : 10A2155
Running Snow Leo 10.6.1
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r32

I did not transfer my old data.

It happens even if flash is not in use, I'm not a video watcher.

You're all reporting high CPU usage, in that case anyone having this issue should look at Activity Monitor which process(es) is/are using the CPU.

For that, you open Activity Monitor, and you order the processes list by "CPU %". Then give here the process(es) name(s).

As of now it seems that it's related to Flash. Also some report that even after Flash being killed or stopped to use the CPU, the computer remained sluggish for some times. Then it may well be because Flash used also a lot of RAM additionally to CPU. You can check that also on Activity Monitor.
If Flash use a lot of RAM and fill the RAM, the system will have to swap in and out to get some fresh air. In that case, the system get quite slow for some time. You can observe that for example when using VMWare or Parallels Desktop and assigning too much RAM to the VM (like assigning 3GB when you have 4GB of physical RAM).

If it's really Flash related, my advice is to report it to Adobe, and to remove the Flash plugin altogether (cf /Library/Internet Plug-Ins) and wait for a Flash plugin revision.

Strange to see the discussion in this thread coming to different conclusions to the [previous thread on the same topic!|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2134215]

I have found that Installing the [ClickToFlash plugin|http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash> suggested in that thread provides a workaround.

NO DOUBT.
OSX 10.6 + Safari problem.
When I upgrade 10.6 from 10.5 on same machine, I see a big difference on flash player performance under same full screen flash website.
Use another browser would solve the problem.
It doesn't related to new iMac, it is related to the safari, I have lot of mac here have the same problem including MacPro 8core.
