This iPhone requires backup files to be encrypted

Anyone know why an iPhone would start prompting to encrypt a backup? I have not manually selected to encrypt backups. If I select cancel it won't let me backup the phone.

Bottom line is that I want to use "Missing Sync for iPhone" to backup text messages and voicemails which requires un-encrypted backups so I definitely do not want to encrypt my backups.

Looks like I'm answering my own question - wash trade 😉

Turns out I had a VPN configuration profile (created using iPhone Configuration Utility) installed that was causing it. The VPN configuration profile had passwords stored in it for my VPN user so I'm guessing that that caused the encryption requirement. Removing the profile removed the encryption requirement.

Manually configuring the VPN connection on the phone itself (not using the iPhone Configuration Utility) did not have an encryption requirement for the backup.

Caveat for players.

YMMV but I also have another profile for corporate email active that does not seem to have any problem with requiring encrypting backups.

I still don't know what the issue was with VPN profiles requiring encrypted backups though. May be because they contain passwords? Seems asinine that VPN profiles require encrypted backups but other profiles that might also contain passwords do not.
