Pixel patterns / ghosting on display, cursor and other places

I recently tried to clean up my i-Tunes library by moving all the music folders onto the desk top, and then moving them back into the itunes folder. As soon as I moved the music to the desk top, most of the folder icons stacked up (literally hundreds) on top of my Macintosh HD icon. When this happened, I also encountered a problem - there are black pixel patterns in various parts of the display - the most prominent one, is about 3/4" square and is attached (and moves) with the cursor. Also, there are patterns on the menu bar, and the app tray. Also, the patterns shadow dialog boxes. these aren't solid black shadows. I have shown an example of the pattern below (low tech) which is larger than the real thing, but it has the same pattern. The cursor is at the upper right of the square shape of the pattern. I have reset the PRAM and SMU once each with no success. The odd thing is, that the problem happened as soon as I moved the music folders onto the desktop.
Any ideas? I wanted to explore some remedies before I take it to Apple.
Thanks

ImacG5 17" 2d generation ambient light sensor.

Similar problem, little hatche marks appearing and remaining all over the screen.
Seems to ghost whatever the finder does in response to the mouse.

I tried resetting the PRAM. No difference.

I was thinking of just getting one of the new iMacs, but looking into other iMac discussion area it appears there are some major problems cropping up there.

I recently had more memory added to this machine and wonder if something happened at the repair shop.

Same problem here. That pattern has become maddeningly familiar in the past few hours. My cursor has that look, as does every icon on my desktop. The menu bar and dock also have a weird kind of houndstooth pattern on them that makes everything very hard to read.

I've checked video settings and tried different screen resolutions, all to no avail.

This is all the same no matter what user account I'm logged in to. I don't have the right cable to connect an external monitor to my iMac, so I can't tell if it's the display or the graphics card or something else.

I have no or unreadable display. The problem is a batch of bad capacitors. This is a world wide problem that has effected many hardware manufacturers. The capacitors over time break down and leak or rupture. In the last three months I have seen 2 bad video cards, and my iMac with the bad capacitors. I just ordered the replacement capacitors to fix my iMac. Good luck to all. This is a Quality Control issue with the capacitor manufacturer, and tons of companies use these capacitors.
