Rio S10 not recognized in iTunes 9.0

iTunes 9.0 and 9.0.1 do not recognize my Rio S10 MP3 player. I didn't have any problems until upgrading iTunes. The player still works in iTunes 8.x.

Does anybody have any suggestions how to get iTunes 9 to recognize my player?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I am seeing the same problem with my Rio players - an S30 and a Cali. Neither is recognized in iTunes 9.0.1 or 9.0.2, but both worked with the last version of 8 (I believe 8.2.1). The computer correctly identifies both devices in System Profiler under USB.

Does anyone know if Rio support has been dropped in iTunes 9, or is this a bug?

iTunes is only designed to support syncing of Apple devices. Some other devices have been reverse engineered over the years, but that capability is unofficial and can "break" without notice. Apple became more restrictive recently, due to a flap with Palm.

If the songs in your iTunes library are in MP3 format, you can still use them in the player. To sync, follow the instructions that came with the player.

Here is some other potentially useful information:

Apple's web site still claims to support the player (as of 10 April 2010): http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2172

Rio's support web site says to check the iTunes folder to make sure the plug-in is still installed; however, there does not appear to be any plug-in files in this folder. ( http://support.rioaudio.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=28)

The support article referenced above carries an April 2010 date, but it contains statements like "Songs purchased from the iTunes Store are encoded using the AAC Protected format." It looks like obsolete information that somebody slapped a new date on.

And in view of the very public spat between Apple and Palm, I wouldn't count on iTunes to support non-Apple devices.

Can't use a USB card reader to drag and drop MP3's to the memory card either. Now what??

Try updating to the newest iTunes. The 9.2.1 feature list had a cryptic reference to resolving issues with drag and drop.
