Log out without closing aplications?

Is there any way to set the system to log out ( automatically, if possible after a period of time ) but without closing the session, just going back to the user selection screen. So I can let my applications run and use another user account et the same time.

I know it is possible to change in between accounts manually, but I am searching for way to make it automatically, so I can leave my computer working, and it's gonna go back to the user selection screen by itself and let my account running.

Thanks

Macbook 2.0 ghz, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

logging out means terminating the login session including all applications. what you mean is fast user switching. you can enable fast user switching , set a screensaver or sleep timer and check the option in security system preferences to require password on wake from sleep or screensaver. with fast user switching turned on, the wake from sleep password screen will give you an option to either enter the password and resume the current session or to go to the login window and switch users.
