30" Display Flickering/Dancing Pixels

I picked up a 30" display and the issues started ... This is not a dead/stuck pixels issue.

Bought the display at my local Apple store, got it home set it up and did the usual dead pixel search, OK there's three of them (two red one green), round the edges and to honest the pixel size on this display is so small that unless you have a cluster of them in one spot then the odd one here or there isn't really noticeable.

But then, after the screen has been on for a while I see green flickering or dancing pixels on the display. They disappear if you move the mouse pointer over them but reappear when the pointer is moved away, in fact this can even make them multiply.

I search here on the forums and found this :

Again 30" display with lots of green pixels

That post also contains a link to another post of the issue (and even includes an image of the issue at :

Flickering green and blue pixel problem

OK, I'm not going mad and it's not my eyes.

So, I return to the store and we can reproduce it on their G5 with GeForce 6800 Ultra. Something I am very pleased about as it proves it's not my G5 of GeForce card, and the store replaces the screen.

Screen #2: Get it home set it up again do the dead/stuck pixel search, none this time, wow OK let's leave the screen on for a while with nothing happening and ... green flicker returns.

Now, it does go away if you turn the screen off then on again. But they do come back. Sometimes not straight away, but only takes a few minutes. So screen #2 will be going back ...

It definitely would seem to be a display issue as in the threads above it happens on ATI and GeForce cards, Laptops and Desktops (though I didn't see anyone having issues on Windows).

Thanks for reading

Spencer

[EDIT - Update:

I took the second display back to the Apple Store and we proved it on a third G5 and GeForce 6800 Ultra. Let me make sure that's clear. We demonstrated this to the Genius on hand with two different displays that had the issue on my G5 Dual 2.5 with GeForce 6800 at home and with two G5 2.5's with 6800 's at the store.

The staff were great, they waited until it returned (about 30 minutes) and were very interested when it happened. I made the decision not to try a 3rd screen and took a refund which the store did not give me any hassle in doing so.

I just want to say, if this mail seems to be anti-Apple it is not meant to be. The 30" screen is a great screen, the color was great and it if it were not for this one issue I would be proud to own one. The staff at the store were all polite and helpful.

Hopefully, Apple will realise this issue and find a solution for it.

Spencer

I don't know what to make of it or what to believe. I have scurried about google on this problem many times and intensively over time. People have replaced their graphic cards, replaced their displays. The problem still remains.

You state your 6800 is fine as is your 30", whats to say I get a replacement 30" or if it is still at all possible to get a 6800 Ultra replaced that the issue still remains...

What makes it worse is there is no solution, everyone just offers their guesses... and their takes on what it could be, but to this day there has never been a 100% solid solution to it. Apart from Apple people saying they've never heard of it and several displays swapped out. Which the problem has never changed for the majority.

How can you gamble with hardware swapouts when so many have done it and not a thing has solved it...

As I have stated before the only way to trigger this is to let the display sleep then wake it up after 5 to 10 mins of inactivity. Usually 7/10 times the DVI noise/dancing green pixels appear, but if the display has been on for 10 to 24 hours it'll never appear for me.

If it was a fault it surely would happen all the time, if it was defective hardware. Whatever happens with the graphics card when the system sleeps the display that goes all funny after the display has woken up is way beyond me. Which tells me it has to be driver related. If it was the hardware it would be happening whether the display is on and off/in sleep mode, surely.

Just an update - I seem to have fixed the issue by upgrading my graphics cards from GeForce 7900GTXs to an 8800GTX and an 8800GTS.

I don't know why it's no longer happening - all I can say is I haven't seen the green pixels once in Windows since installing these new cards 2 months ago. With the previous cards, I would see this problem every single day.

What are we suppose to do then? had this display since May 07. I would have got it changed but as its stated before, people have had up as far as 7 displays replaced and the same problem exists.

Is it actually a hardware defect?
Is it a driver problem from OS X's drivers?
Is it a graphics card problem?

So many questions on this topic with no answers. Its all maybes, possibilities, what if's but never 100% proof of what the problem is, which is driving me batty. The biggest fear I have now getting my display replaced is getting another screen with stuck or dead pixels, backlight problems or a refurbished unit...

Its not the first I've heard on this topic, they send their really good display in with this problem to get a replacement with one of the above problems back with it.

Right now the screen is immaculate but just has this DVI noise problem when coming out of display sleep.

After experiencing the dancing-pixel problem with annoying regularity, it has completely stopped for nearly a week. The only thing I've noticed is that ambient temperatures are quite a bit lower than they have been recently due to unusually cool weather. Where I live (near San Francisco) we don't typically have air conditioning. Another possible culprit could be low line voltages during periods of high peak demand on hot days. I play to keep a log of both to see if there's a pattern. Anyone else see temps or line voltage as having an effect on this?

I have a 30" and had no problem with it connected to a G5. I just got a Quad Intel and then saw green dancing pixels. After a few attempts of changing profiles and other settings, I switched the port connection from 1 to the 2 position (back of computer where you connect the monitor). The dancing pixels disappeared. I don't know if it is permanent fix. But, for now it seems to be working fine.

Just to let you know my story. I bought my monitor brand new in Dec 05, it has been fine until yesterday(was not even aware that these dancing pixel problems existed) I have always used an X 800 XT card, infact the card broke last year and was replaced by ATI. So I have had 2 Cards with no issues. I then decided to format my G5 mac and reinstall everything (I had trouble with slow network issues, which ended up being a router problem). After er-install Everthing was still fine. I dont know if this is coincidence but I installed Aperture and I didnt notice any issues and a day later I installed Final Cut Pro. Then the problems started, mine being Red sparkles (sometimes in uniform vertical lines) other times random dull sparkles.

*If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.*

I really don't fancy taking that chance.

This was changed for later G5's. The equivalent to pushing this button is pulling the power cable from the back of the G5.

Sadly this problem hasn't sorted it for me. I thought it did at first, as 3 - 4 days had past and it never happened. Then when I changed wallpaper that has a black car. During startup today the DVI noise was on screen all over the black car.

Has anyone found a reliable way to replicate this? I get it at least once a day with my Santa Rosa MPB, but it seems to be sporadic (sometimes it's 10 AM, sometimes it 3 PM) so it's really tough to show up at the apple store and "show" them the problem (even with over 40,000 views on this thread - they still play dumb). I'm not too keen on having to send my only computer out for a two week evaluation period at which point they would just send it back for warranty service and keep it for another three weeks (if I'm lucky to get it back that soon.)

Dear Apple, my design studio has spent over $10,000 on your equipment in the last year alone. The fact that there seems to be no acknowledgment of systemic flaw in hardware AND that the procedure for reporting and fixing the problem is painful leads me to consider spending our procurement dollars elsewhere.

I have had exactly the same recurring issues.
Not to mention virtually dislocating my shoulder lugging the bloody screen to Southampton Apple store.

I also get flickering horizontal purple line in the dark areas.
The Apple store have yet to see the problem, as it doesn't always occur.
I will try this compressed air trick that John Manzione suggests.
