Disk Insertion Error

In Disk Utility tried to reformat an empty Mercury HD from journaled to extended. It hung. After waiting I quit - after getting a warning that doing so might make disk inoperable.

So now I have a drive that OSX won't recognize… "The disk you inserted can not be read"

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Open Disk Utility.
Click the Erase tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended.
Click Erase & look for Security Options. choose Zero 1 pass."
