I am continually asked for my passwords for Mail. I am using Comcast.net. Even locking them in keychain doesn't help. Anybody having the same problems and a solution. Comcast doesn't seem to know much about OSX.
24" iMac 2.4Ghz, 4GB, MacBook Intel, IPods,
Mac OS X (10.5.8)
Comcast doesn't seem to know much about anything - it's been a frustrating experience for me. Along the way, I've learned a few things:
For no apparent or logical reason, Mail won't work with Comcast (or vice versa). I've had to trash the Mail preferences .plist file several times (user/library/preferences: com.apple.mail.plist). That will make Mail think you are opening it for the first time and you will need to re-enter all settings. Your mailboxes will still all be there. After the first time (and after I tested it to make sure it was working), I made screenshots of all the Accounts preferences windows so I could easily copy the entries if I had to do it again.
In your Mail Preferences, make sure you have the following:
Incoming mail server: mail.comcast.net and port 110 (under advanced tab), do NOT check "use SSL", Authentication: Password
Outgoing mail server: smtp.comcast.net and port 587 or 25 (whichever one they told you to use), do NOT check SSL, Authentication: None
Starting over is a pain, but it's the only way I've found that'll work (at least while dealing with Comcast).
I have the same problem but it happens independend of the provider.
When there is a problem (which?) that results in asking for a password I do not fill in any password and choose "Ignore. Very often it happens that the password disappears in the mailpreferences however in Keychain it is still correct.
This happens since the latest 10.6.1 update. So it is OSX related.
Having the same problem with att accounts losing passwords in mail. It's not the preference file, but possibly something with the keychain file. Going to check that route now.
Got the same problem in France too, since several days
Mail accounts preferences can't keep P/W more than a few minutes.
Hoping Apple will fix it rapidly, 'cause it's quite irritating
Thanks to these topics on Apple discussions I know now it does'nt comes from my settings...
Some of you may have got some infos from Apple on it?
10.6.2 will fix it?
Wait and see?
Have the same problem with my iMac running on 10.6.1 (Mail 4.1) but I don't have the problem with my PowerBook G4 running on 10.4.11 (Mail 2.1.13)… so I'll update my iMac and cross my fingers 🙂
It may be a problem caused by one of the last system updates. I had the same issue on my MBP. After having downloaded & installed the 10.6.2 Combo update over the existing 10.6.2 which was updated via Software Update the problem has gone as well as a Bluetooth connectivity issue (which was the reason for the re-install).
I am having the same problem 10.6.2
The problem is not consistent. When I open mail at the start of the day sometimes it will ask for the password, and sometimes not. If it does I then go to Pref. Accounts add it and save. i have gone all day without any request for a password. Then on other days I have had to add it 4-5 times.
I hope this gets fixed in 10.6.3
When an error occurs during authentication on a mail server, the Mail program will re-prompt for password next time. So it may be that while the authentication is successful the server may have signaled an error condition.
Try using Window -> Connection Doctor when you make connections to servers to see if any error messages are returned.
