Just dropped my 3 month old Macbook Pro..

..and everything seems fine except the lid. The lid has a pretty gnarly dent from where it hit the hardwood floor. Was almost 5 feet so I'm pretty impressed it seems fine honestly. Is it possible to get the lid replaced though? It seems Applecare doesn't cover accidental damage which is understandable so how much is it going to run me about? Anyone have any experience with getting just the metal portion of the lid replaced? I just wanted an idea of what to expect before I schedule an appointment.

The display unit (back, bezel, glass, LCD, backlights, cables, hinges, Airport, etc.) can't be taken apart and reassembled outside the factory with the same precision and low risk to the components as inside the factory — or with an equal chance of getting it back together without dirt inside the glass. It isn't really made to be taken apart, and though it can be done, Apple won't do it. You may find an independent repair service that will tackle it for less than the cost of a complete display, but I don't know.

There is a good video on youtube showing how to take the LCD out of the casing. It looks very similar to the way it is done on the white MacBook. I did the operation on my MacBook and it really was quite easy. about a 1 hour job.

Anyway, once you get the dented case off you could either replace it with a new one, but if you cant find a new one an auto body shop might be able to straighten out the dented one.

The worst that can happened if you attempt this is that you might crack the glass of the LCD. Then you would need to buy the whole assembly, LCD in casing, but if you were going to do that anyway you are not out anything additional. I had no problem but the MBP is somewhat different in that the outer most surface is glass as well as th inner layers. On the MacBook the outer most pane was plastic.

Another option that I always check out is buying an inoperative MacBook on eBay that has the parts you need but something else broke. You get the parts you need off of it then put it back on eBay and sell the rest of it as a parts machine to someone who needs some other part.
