New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Maybe my sons experience will help others

Screen tearing flickering etc as described by others since delivery Dec 09. Fixed by sleep/wake cycle. This happened on FULL graphics settings WOW and intermittent when WOW not running. Turning down graphics made the problem less regular. First Firmware Update didn't work at all. Second Firmware applied yesterday and all seems to be normal. Son turned WOW settings to full last night and hammered the iMac for many hours and not an occurrence of the issue. Which, at times occurred regularly while WOW was running. That is our experience. And for the record Apple suggested returning the iMac early on as DOA with no guarantee of a replacement in any time and if your guessing with the current delay that's 3 weeks with no iMac !!

I commend Apple on their effort and implore then to hurry up with the iPad !!

dxgriffiths.......obviously reading comprehension is not your strong point.

I was actually defending your statements, and offering other options as to why your machine was still flickering after so many others had found the update to be a cure.

It was another poster who questioned your motives.

To quote myself from that post Feb 2, 9:43pm.....

"The other two could have a number of reasons for their reporting, including those you mentioned. It is possible that they have other issues causing their problems, or it could be that the update was not properly installed."

Although I did attempt to defend your claims that your iMac was still flickering after the update, I have to strongly disagree with your latest claims.

I have two perfect i7's, absolutely perfect. Absolutely no flickering, no yellowing, no dead pixels, and absolutely no noise, in fact, this is by far the quietest machine I have ever owned, and that includes several models of iMacs, and a few windows boxes.

Unfortunately, I have to soon send one of the iMacs back. I received the replacement machine the same day that the firmware update came out. The update cured my flickering old machine, and the new one was perfect out of the box. Can't decide which to send back. I may just have to keep them both.

The Quad iMacs are worth every penny, and then some.

Thanks mypyjamas, glad to hear it has worked for you.

I would hope that more who have followed this thread, and have not posted for one reason or another would post now, and let everyone know whether or not the update has worked for them as well.

BTW, the iPad may have played a large role in the amount of time it took for Apple to resolve the flickering issue. Can you imagine the amount of resources that Apple dedicated to the iPad's release? No doubt a lot of R&D personnel were heavily involved, and not available to work on the issues of existing products.

If you enter your eaddress at this link.......

They will let you know when it's available for ordering.

I don't think so.

My comment was specifically about quad-core iMacs, since they have additional fans that the older Core 2 versions don't have. The i5/7 range of processors is desktop class and therefore requires additional cooling, even when the computer is totally idle.

For anyone who's monitoring the flicker situation and is a potential buyer, I'd recommend weighing up whether the extra speed is worth the loss of totally silent operation.

Just for the record.... Had flickering since I first bought the iMac 27inch, firmware update 1 didn't work at first, but for the last 3 weeks, I've had no flickering! Even playing COD4 at full resolution. Strange... Anyway, I updated to the 2nd firmware update, and still no flickering. I know its too soon to tell, but I hope this (or the first, with time?) worked!

Glad to hear that most also haven't had the problems after the update. Now I can finally use my iMac the way it was meant to be used!

So far, the 2010 week 05 iMac has been flawless. No cracked screen, pristine packaging. Been spending the past four hours loading apps, continuous on, screensaver a few times. Everything is as it should be. Not one flicker, no yellowing. I let Software Update load any and all available updates. None of them were a firmware or display load. Possibly already on machine. Will continue to watch machine for any irregularities.

Here is a status report on my replacement 27" i7. I set up the machine Tuesday evening. First, re-install OS X from the DVD (had some disk issues on the first machine). Next, run the extended Apple HW Test (no issues). Third, I set up Airport and downloaded all the SW updates. After checking to see that all was operating smoothly, I migrated my documents (no apps) from the old iMac. Since then, I've installed several apps, including iWork. After about 7 hours of running time, the machine has been flawless. No flicker, no yellow tint, no dead pixels. I have not installed the display firmware update and don't plan to unless a problem arises. Recall, this is a week 05 machine. So far, so good. Think positive!

i had my week 53 for about 2 weeks now 8 dead pixels are still there!! waiting to see if the new update really works just by judging from the past flickering issues i had, it took a couple days of play befor the flickering showed up .so until a decent amount of time pases by, i can"t truly say the update work, but anyway this puppy is going back as soon as i get my new 27inch i7 replacement sometime this week .i would like to say that i have faith in apple inc. If you are still setting on the sidelines just get in the game you will not be disappointed. Apple staff has made me fill really secure in this whole FLICKERING process, i was able to keep my busted machine until my replacement gets sent out, so go on!! get your apples you will live longer.

For those of you who are interested in screen issues, there appears to be a backlog of screens in the UK. I hope, if this is true, that it does not affect us in the U.S. I really want to buy a 27" iMac soon, but will wait until this is all fixed.

Been at it for another three hours. Nothing abnormal has occurred. No flicker, rebooted a couple of times. Screensaver has kicked in a few times. No problems awakening. So far, it's been a very good machine. Loaded all of my software thru Firewire, plus reinstalled some apps where I had serial number saved.

Everything is smooth. Here's hoping for a continuance of the good stuff.

I had flickering issues and an occasional black out since I have my iMac i7(build week 52). It came with the first firmware/update.
Flickering was very random and every now and then (maybe once a week, not using my machine heavily). In fact there where flickerings on my screen on tuesday evening right before I got the latest firmware update. And then...since this update...no problems/no flickerings/no blackouts.
Ofcourse it's too soon to say it will work on the long run, but for now I have good hopes. No reason to shut down this thread; a few days possibly doesn't say all. Indeed we'll have to wait at least a couple of weeks. This thread hopefully will then die automatically and everybody will continue living their own lives:-)
