New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Citrus.........

"what're we doing with Dino, when he reaches post number 1000? I think, you're the one with the pictures, so what about fireworks. Could you arrange that for us?"

You guys better make those plans quickly........Dino needs less than forty posts to pass 1000.

That gives you about another thirty minutes.

Might save the party for 2000 posts, he'll probably reach that sometime around Thursday or Friday.

Hope I'm not giving you guys the impression that I'm posting, just to post. This subject has just sucked me in so to speak. And I know the Flicker issue 2nd Update has helped most, but I rally have a need to know WHY. Especially the Yellow issue. We all know Apple's Engineers have tested most of the stuff people have come up with on this thread. How come this issue has Apple stumped & for so long? I just hope it doesn't turn out to be something stupid, that is the cause. I need a Technological Answer. It just boggles my mind, that no one knows.

Dino....... We're just picking on you a little. All in fun.

Obviously, the firmware update was a cure for the overwhelming majority of users with the flickering issue.

The only way that we may ever know exactly what caused it, is if some geek decides to take apart the update to find out what it does.

Apple will never make an announcement, or even publicly acknowledge it. They simply cure it and move on.

They've handled the flickering, and are probably focusing on the yellowing now, so that should be resolved soon as well, even though it affects fewer units than the flickering. Supply shortages caused by high demand for these models will most likely slow down that resolution, at least, until more replacement components are available.

BTW..........only 32 more posts to 1000..........(snicker)

No offense taken Guys. I feel like you guys are my buds at this point. We're the last 3 of the 5 Cats, that remain. My iMac is shipping on Feb. 18th. 2 others on here were given that date & got an email saying their iMacs had already Shipped. Mine remains to ship on the 18th. I'm hoping that's a good thing. Maybe getting a Week 05 0r even an 06. Of course, I'm believing the newer stock hot off the press, will be free of any defects. Am I dreaming? 🙂 I sure hope not.

Dear Atlatnesiti, I am afraid you do not bother to read signatures otherwise you surely would have known that i DO own an iMac 24" and I am looking for some genuine infos here before upgrading to a 27" i7.....oh yes you are not reading this useless thread anymore so you cannot read my answer....take care and troll somewhere else please. We won't miss you here....

faxao,
My suggestion would be to order from Apple Online. The Apple stores & especially resellers, are going to still have old stock in their Warehouses. It seems, now if you order a 27" online, there is a wait period. Mine won't ship from Shanghai until Feb. 18th. That I feel gives me the advantage of getting a newer maybe defect free iMac hot off the press. That's my strategy, but who knows, I could be wrong.

Please don't close this thread - yet. I am waiting for my replacement i7 to arrive now. It shipped on Feb 5th (week 05?) and is in Memphis. Should be delivered on Tue or Wed. I am hoping for a perfect machine. I'm not worried about flicker any more but the yellow haze and dead pixels still make me nervous. I expect any Mac I purchase with my hard earned money (I teach 7th grade) to be as close to perfect as possible. The one I sent back wasn't. I'll let you know how the new one looks as soon as I set it up. This thread is the first I have followed this closely ever. I check in frequently and it's been a great comfort. I feel informed when I read the posts (with a few minor exceptions.) To the knowledgeable, experienced, posters who have kept us all informed, I say thanks. More follows.

I agree. Although this thread is about flickering/tearing, a lot has been said about the yellowing problem. So it may be useful to keep it open and see how that issue affect new Macs. Not to mention the lack of 100% clarification on flickering.

And on the subject of stock, the John Lewis chain in the UK is completely out of stock of 27" i5s. So their new stock will come straight from Apple when they start producing some new ones. Just thought this information may be useful for any UK folks looking to buy a new i5.
