Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

I ordered the i7 on december 8, when it said "Ships 7-10 days". Now its changed to "2 weeks". Still shipping and delivery dates for my order has not changed. I wonder if this means, my iMac is going to get shipped with a faulty graphics card? :o

"We have received several reports from Apple resellers that..."

what makes you think this is an official statement?

Replacement 27" Quad-core 2.8GHz iMac is being delivered this morning. First iMac had all the screen issues described in this thread. Will report back when the new one is opened up and tested for a few hours.

On the plus side, my replacement machine shipped from China, Dec 10 at 10:34 am, and is being delivered here in New Jersey today (Dec 11) by 10:30 am. Maybe only the good thing about this disaster is the quick shipping.

Had my i5 (wk 47) for 11 days and just started to get some flickering today. Flickers about once a minute and screen blackout about twice an hour. Just rebooted and so far ok. Strangely, I'm feeling sort of relieved. Not knowing whether I had a good one was quite stressful. At least now I know. This is my 4th mac and the first I've had a problem with. It's not so much the fault that's disappointing, it's Apple's total silence on the matter that I find hard to swallow. Seems they don't give a stuff about their customers after all. Even if they don't have an answer, it would be good to know they are aware of the issue and are working on it. C'mon Apple.

Seems that mum's the word as far as Apple is concerned? I'm holding off buying a new machine until I see this has been addressed.

Just heard back from Apple and they have told me to get the LCD panel and a cable changed. Probably going to take a few days but I'll report back with the results. Hope I don't swap the flickers for a yellow tinge.

A full week since I got the replacement (same batch number as faulty one) and still no sign of flickers or yellow tinge.

    Keeping my fingers crossed.

Looks like a few pages of this thread got cut out?? Crazy. Perhaps Apple will comment soon.

That's true. Found it in my browser cache when I moved some pages back. Strange? A mistake, a miracle or a complot? :-?

From time to time some posts depart too far from the Terms Of Use hence surgery. Keeping posts polite and within the TOU is a good idea. I am just a User who happens to have an excellent i7 but browsing this area for obvious reasons. I wish everyone well in resolving defects.

Called Apple UK and very quick to offer a replacement for my i7.
Email confirmation of likely dispatch (web ordered with 2 x 4GB chips) a few hours later.
Plus a waiver to keep faulty iMac (I can still work on it) until new one arrives.
Excellent customer service as I've come to expect from Apple.

I might as well add myself to the stream.

I bought my 27" i5 today and so far it's had two episodes of severe flickering and one episode of stuttering. It's been displaying a slide show as a convenient way to test.

When I move my mouse it's fine thereafter.

I am wondering the same thing since I ordered the i5 on Dec. 8. My ship date is still Dec. 22, with a delivery date of Dec. 28, and I have not been notified of a two week delay.
