Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

"t's Apple's total silence on the matter that I find hard to swallow. Seems they don't give a stuff about their customers after all. Even if they don't have an answer, it would be good to know they are aware of the issue and are working on it." Get real. Apple NEVER admits its mistakes (including such things as detailed reports of bugs in its software). Its legal department would veto any such candor, because admissions of mistakes might be interpreted as admissions of liability. Somebody, for instance, might sue Apple for the downtime and consequent loss of income and other damages (mental cruelty???) suffered as the result of this display problem. You might think that most such lawsuits would be trivial and without substantial merit, and you’d be right. But defending yourself against even trash lawsuits eats up time and money. Apple has some extremely bright people working on this problem, and the new quad iMacs have the potential to be huge best-sellers if they don’t get a bad reputation, so I expect these display problems to be solved sooner rather than later, if it hasn’t been already. Probably word will leak out about the cause of the problem, too many people will be involved in coping with it to hush it up successfully. But don’t expect any official statement from Apple. It just ain’t gonna happen.

Yeah, the only answer we'll get from Apple is either a program/recall or a firmware/software release once they have a fix. Until then Apple keeps quiet and will continue to handle this on an individual basis.

LCD and display cable fix report - 36.5 hours now and no signs of any of the symptoms. I am not holding my breath until she makes it a few more days though.

    I just read this...

    Update Dec. 9

We have received several reports from Apple resellers that all shipments of 27" iMacs have been delayed by 2 weeks as Apple is in the process of replacing the graphics card. The shipment time on the Apple Store has also been changed to say "Ships 2 weeks". Some people also are reporting that they are being advised their projected ship dates are being pushed back.

So has Apple figured out that it is a hardware issue?

    Hello Don,

While the person who runs that site is doing a great service to keep us Mac users informed of the problems that have been occurring with the new iMacs by giving us an overview of the situation, please note that neither he -- nor the AAR's who he is quoting -- are the official word from Apple.

Until Apple publicly comes out and makes a statement -- which may never happen, or which may indirectly happen in coming months -- everything else is just the opinion of third parties. This doesn't mean that they are wrong, it just means that it is not official, and that is what we all want to hear -- the official word directly from Apple.

In case you weren't aware of it, this is the second time now that someone has come out and stated that Apple is dealing with defective graphic cards, but there is STILL no official word from Apple concerning this.

This is not an open discussion forum, they will remove posts they don't like - doesn't have to be rude, profane, or off topic, if they do not like the content of a post they will remove it. It's Apple's web site, so their rules, and if you want a discussion outside the bounds of what Apple will permit, try MacRumors or other computing related forums. (If I had to guess, I'd wonder if they weren't removing unfortunate stories of Apple employee responses to the defective machines.) Not altogether surprising although certainly doesn't have the same friendly, open feel you usually get when talking to Apple support.

W48 - 5 days running with no issues of any kind yet. Only done light work on it though, bit of Photoshop, Logic Pro, watch videos and internet... no gaming or intense video work.

    Hi Sonics
This looks promising - hope it's the solution because that's what AppleCare have told me to get changed, both screen and cable.

As far as I can tell, that page is aggregated from this thread. So information there can only be trusted as much as information in this thread - given the number of trolls who post false information to muddy the waters, that would be somewhat less than a good rumour site...

I have read numerous articles/posts on this issue now and have not yet seen anything from New Zealand so I am posting this to inform readers that this has happened/is happening in NZ.
We bought our iMac 27-inch around 6 weeks ago and the flickering & blackouts began around 2 weeks after purchase.
Have informed Apple support - they had not heard of this issue at the time so had me do reboots and run the hardware tests etc. None of these things have made a difference.

As described in other posts - flickering and blackouts don't seem to be related to anything and it has become worse over time (more frequent, bigger lines and longer blackouts).

Waiting to hear back from Apple support on what the next step is. Hopefully they have heard of this happening in NZ by now.

    Hello there,
I'm experiencing random flickering issues too. Totally random.
I installed OS from scratch, no restore or import tools at all. Obviously I'm just out of the 14 days, of course (but I bought apple care plan too).
When flickering issue comes, rebooting I solve. I saw it for the 3rd times today in a month so, right now, it's not so painful like others experiences I read here.
I didn't change ati drivers nor perform PRAM/NVRAM reset at all.
Now I'm following this thread to monitor what's happening around my dear 27". I'm still without UPS and i tought that could be some power spark/instability.

Is there some user here using bootcamp with windows who experienced the flickering issue too?
    With a good UPS?

    I badly hope it's a software/firmware fault because I don't want to ask a replacement:\

I bought it on november, 23 at Roma Est Apple Store
    Other info:
    HD 4850/512MB
    Revisione ROM: 113-B9110C-394
    Versione driver EFI: 01.00.367

Anyhow, Monday I'll give a call at Apple and I'll update you all on what Italian Apple Service Support will supply to their customers about flickering issues.

    Keep in touch,
    A,

Now I'am writing this text on the replacement for my W8945.
It's a W8950 ... and is running well (till now)
Mac OS: No flickering, no yellow tint, the hard disk is silent, and temperature is low
    Windows 7: running without problems
