Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Hard to say yet, as mine was usually days between flickers (3-7 days) but after the patch all is OK so far. Will keep you posted if it returns...

few hours after i applied the update patch.
unfortunately doesn't seem to work for me.
i ll try to switch off and unplug the power supply 1 min, seems that it worked correctly for 1 day last time i did it...

Now that is both disturbing and disappointing. Still enjoying a healthy i7 here but it makes me wonder if trouble is brewing.

I agree, and I'm in the same boat as you with my week 49 i7.

So far, so good, but...watching...waiting...wondering...with fingers crossed...

This firmware revision is beginning to look like a big disappointment for many flicker sufferers - me included. So far it looks like the 'didn't fix it' are outweighing the 'fixed it'. And it seems that some that didn't have a problem before have now got one. I hope there is a permanent solution soon.

Hey guys this is going to sound crazy and I am only suggesting it because I had a similar experience on my last iMac (intel). FYI, I now have the i7 and it works flawlessly. Anyway I went for months with screen flashes and freezes and honestly thought the 20" iMac was dying. Turned out I had a hard drive connected that had an incompatible driver which was weird because I had been using it for quite sometime, but all the troubles started after an upgrade. Anyway, just for laughs disconnect any drives and restart and see how things work. I feel for you and know the frustration.

    Anything that works, works.

Called tech support. She had me do a PRAM reset and since then I loaded 25 programs, many of which were busy doing things like playing music, using iSight, playing video - no more flicker or black screens. I expressed my doubts that the PRAM reset would help, but it appears to have been effective for this.

By the way, with 25 programs loaded and several active, I was able to use only 4 GB of this 16 GB machine. All 8 threads were busy but overall CPU use was modest most of the time. I think I taxed the GPU though and no problems.

    Rest PRAM procedure:
    Shutdown the computer,
    unplug every cable,
    unplug the power cable,
    wait half a minute,
plug everything back in and then power on while holding down OPTIONCOMMAND+PR for two chimes,
    then release the keys.

Worked for me so far after doing the firmware update.

Would love to hear from others to see if the issue was corrected after the firmware update. So far so good on mine, but I only updated it one hour ago. For those that it didn't correct the issue for, how long after the update was your first flicker? Couple hrs, couple days...?

Tonight i received my replacement 27" iMac. It came from China via UPS.

My original failing iMac was made in week 47. This replacement model was made in week 44 !?! How's that possible?

Also remarkable... it came with 10.6.2 and the graphics update already installed... it doesn't look that this model was used before. Everything was sealed and with the original plastic cover etc ...

Let's hope this one doesn't flicker.

*Problem NOT corrected after firmware update!*

Flickers are back and finder menu dropped down 1/3 of the screen and then to 1/2 the screen.
It flickered a few more times and went back to a normal screen (finder menu at the top) but still flickering.
    Took some pictures of it.
Will call service to tell them it's not working and see what they say.

I just installed the update and haven't had a flicker yet, but that doesn't prove anything.

Having an electronics engineering background I suspect that this is a timing issue that only occurs under very specific circumstances. We'd get these type of intermittent field returns and it would take us a long time to diagnose the actual cause, but eventually we'd always figure it out.

I trust that Apple is aware of the issue and is still working to resolve the problem. The best thing we can do is continue to relay information about our symptoms after the firmware update was applied.

Everyone that is still having problems should do both of the following:

    1. Call Apple to let them know of your problem
    2. Go to imac.squeaked.com and enter your details, there is now a "Flickering after Firmware Update" category
