Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

    Dear Santa Claus,
I would like an iMac 27 for this Xmas, but please remember to remove those flickering lights that your elf has carelessly put into it.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

    Applied firmware update yesterday afternoon..

No flickers for the first few hours and then they're back.

    This is ridiculous!

    C'mon Apple own up already..

UPDATE: Because I will be out of my 30 day period with Barclays for the 12 months same as cash financing, I opted for a replacement machine instead of a refund. After arguing about the ridiculous 2 week downtime, my corporate CSR called me later in the day stating my machine was rushed in to production today and I should receive it next week. Fingers crossed... Meanwhile I just received my replacement wireless keyboard and complimentary apple remote (gee thanks Apple. All is forgiven. Not.)

    Will keep you all updated.

Just wanted to add one more to the list. Installed the firmware update the day it was released. Thought I was lucky until about 30 minutes ago. Merry Christmas.

ps. I bought the remote with the computer... I wonder what free gift I'll get!?!?

Well, I picked up my i7 last night at the Apple store. I had called them earlier wondering what was happening as they said it might be fixed. They said that the screen and cable parts hadn't come in yet and they didn't know when they would. They suggested that I p/u the computer after they applied the firmware fix and return it if I still had problems when the parts came in.

(In retrospect, I don't really think they really diagnosed the problem when they decided to order the parts, just thought it might cure such a problem.)

So, I took it home. So far, I haven't had any flickers or blackouts. I used it last night for three + hours or so. When I retired last night I put it to sleep and this AM hit the space bar and it started right up! One thing I did change in my set-up was to hook-up my Apple wired numeric keyboard, instead of the wireless one.

Today, so far about the same. No problems yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

For what it is worth, and it may be worth zip, I ordered my I7 with a wired mouse and keyboard. It just arrived yesterday. So far, so good...we'll see.

I haven't checked in since page 92, so I thought I'd pop in and report that my week 50 unit, received 12/16, has performed flawlessly thus far. I installed the firmware update anyhow and am continuing to hold my breath.

Well you can grab any of the beta production firmwares that are already out, or rumor is that you can wait until the next firmware update and that will have those issues plus stripes for the people that were clamoring for those.

Or if you would rather not deal with the software side, you can pretend you are a UPS driver and just shake it violently in the box, toss in a drop or two for good measure and you are pretty much guaranteed to have an early and bright christmas like the rest of us lucky chaps. I'm still waiting for my leg lamp. All Apple brought me this year was a flickering and yellow tinged imac, which I thought was super cool until I found out like a million other kids got the same one

Just like everyone else on here, i have been experiencing problems with my iMac, I have tried the update and at first I thought it had worked.

This evening the problems came back to haunt me, I didn't have as much flashing or flicker this time, but my display moved down horizontally by 50mm.

Restarted the machine, everything went back to normal, for me the problem seems to start within the first hour of use.

I spoke to support a few days ago, did the Pram reset but that did nothing, the update has not done anything, as my computer is less than a week old I think I will have to ask for a refund.

I sure wish there were an actual test for this screen flicker issue. I've only had my week 51 iMac up for a day. I haven't seen any flicker yet, but I don't sit and watch the screen 24/7. I've run a number of GPU intensive programs, photos, movies, et cetera, at the same time, but I haven't noticed anything annoying. The "update" came pre-installed.

I've had my replacement (same batch) for over three weeks now and still no flickering issues. So I see that Apple is pushing down an graphics card update to address the flickering issues.

I'm afraid to do the update, for fear it'll screw something up. Will wait and see.
