Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Best option (for those who have an apple store near by.) This is what I did, called Apple Support I was given a case number and then told to take it to the local apple store have it repaired turn around is 4 - 5 days. He told me that if were to just have it replaced it would be nearly a MONTH before I received the replacement due to back orders (and this problem everyone seems to be having). He also said that there is a chance I could recieven another with same issues. So its better to just have it repaired.

But If you dont have a store near you.....

    Doc,
Well we can agree to disagree.... about the real potential for b) - I guess.

Some folks here are selling Apple way short ..... (implied negligence) - by suggesting they have not foreseen component compatibility or basic design and production - issues.

Bottom Line is at computer that costs between $1200. & $2000. should be tested before they are boxed & shipped. Every last one of them. I doubt all our iMacs got damaged from shipping. Mine was packed extremely well.

    Dino,
Bottom line is that not all shipped iMacs.... have this alleged / apparent fault... (only a small % of Total) However, component failure is a maybe... but causes for that - is another story - I reckon.

    othdsn:

If Apple doesn't know what is causing the problem(s)), how can repairing the computer fix the problem? Apple is going to change the mother board. The video card is part of the mother board. At least that has been the case in the past. Can we assume that the parts that are changed have nothing wrong with them?

I can't believe you are calling this a SMALL percentage! I know what you mean as far as the big picture goes as to how many they made. But when people on this site alone are getting 3 to 5 defective iMacs in a row. And this is not the only Forum that has these same reports & situations of return after return. Then even if the ratio is 1000 out of 100,000 that are defective, that is still a bad ratio in my book. I don't care how you look at it. It's all the same to an Apple Customer that gets 4 defective iMacs in a row. They should put a hold on returns until they fix or find out what the problem is. Apple should at least address the Customer that has a defect and advise them on what to do, so he or she will not just keep getting another "Lemon" iMac. So people are getting paranoid that if they don't deal with this now, they won't get their problem solved.

My new (week 51) 27" Core i5 iMac had horizontal noise/corruption bars popping up on the display during its very fist boot. Not a good sign, right?

I ignored it and after doing a software update and restart, it was fine. Later after another reboot, they re-appeared, so I put the machine to sleep and woke it back up, and they went away again. It seems that if my display wakes up, it may or may not show the corruption, and whatever state it's in, it will remain that way until the display turns off.

I'm not keen on returning this when they haven't figured it out yet, so I just set my bottom-left corner to "Put Display to sleep" in the Expose / Spaces section. Now if I get the corruption, I just briefly mouse down, let the display go off, then move the mouse again -- so far it has yet to wake up with the corruption twice in a row.

I'll be watching for an official fix. If there isn't one before my return window runs out, I'll decide then just how annoying this is. But so far it isn't impacting my usage noticeably, and the machine otherwise is just fabulous.

I think we have not discussed the fact thoroughly enough that the flicker is gone for a while after putting the Mac to sleep and waking it up a few seconds later. For me, this regularly helps and keeps the screen working for hours and hours.

What happens during sleep-awake that makes such a difference? I am not an expert enough to evaluate this but it seems to me that there must be a clue there.

It's even simpler than putting the machine to sleep: just putting the display to sleep (much faster and less disruptive) does the trick for me.

All this does is power-off the display.

    Thats exactly what I'm saying.....

Which more likely suggest that the Delivery Method/System or Stockpile used to supply those unfortunate Users has a major bearing on matters.... otherwise there would be THOUSANDS of instances. Of course its nowhere near those proportions - its more like >200 from hundreds of thousands.

I don't care how you look at it. It's all the same to an Apple Customer that gets 4 defective iMacs in a row. They should put a hold on returns until they fix or find out what the problem is.>

Yes, I agree Dino.... but as they collate their statistics about this problem - Apple are doing what they can, (Repair or Replace) .... until something conclusive is fully determined... to allow positive corrective action to be taken ?

Example (for Fun) Sack the fat ****-head at Shanghai Airport - who's literally been throwing the iMac packages around...?

Rest assured, there will be a common denominator to all of this.... maybe its just not been discovered yet !

Although I don't agree with you on the Numbers. Do you really think only 200 iMacs are defective? Come On....Australia, London, Germany,US, etc...I think the number is literally in the 1000's. You have almost 100 defectives in this post alone with all the bad exchanges.

I did find your Shanghai Airport guy statement amusing. Only I don't think it's him, it's the guy who's suppose to be testing these before they are boxed ? Tell me I'm not wrong! Apple does have a guy testing these before they are boxed . Correct? Well than those people need to be set up with an Eye Exam ASAP.

Btw, Do you work for Apple? L.O.L.
