Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Thank you TubeRider for your excellent post! My English is not good enough to write, what I would like to write. I'm in the same situation like you: I'm a potential buyer of an iMac 27 and I'm afraid I will remain it.

Dear Apple-Team, please give us a sign!!!

    Heya Folks,

Just received my replacement i7 and it's now day one after unpacking and transferring. I've been messing around with some large scale image files and noticed that the performance was better than my previous flickering i7. I don't hear strange sounds through my external speakers any more as well as the HDD spinning. It basically sounds like my old white iMac.

Anyway, hoping for the best and good luck to those who are still experiencing the issues!

    Best,
    /s0l

Sure, it's week 53 (also can see it in my model-info below)...

Not really sure if the internet hypochondria is getting to me, but I've been testing for yellow-tinging for the better part of this morning. Every time I look closer the more I tell myself I see something.

Talking about destroying the joy in having a new machine, huh? I wish it wasn't this way. I guess I'll try my best to enjoy it and attribute any yellow tinges to my imagination for now until it really starts to set in as in various posts around the web...

    cheerio,

Just got my 27" i7 on the 4th, powered it on, and was happy until I noticed the yellow tinge. I eventually convinced myself that maybe I was just paranoid after reading this thread for the last month or so. Then the flickering began.

I honestly thought that the 2 week shipping delay associated with my order was the result of Apple having a fix for these problems, but obviously not. I can't say that I have much faith of getting a working fix/replacement, so I think I'm going to opt for the route of a return in the hopes that they'll eventually figure this out so I can buy again. $2500 is too much to spend on a giant question mark.

Yep same here, feel exactly the same way. It's a big question mark with a side of uncertainty.

And to be honest, I hate being jerked around like this after spending so much time and effort, when I do notice a serious yellow clouding, I'll be asked to bring it over to the Apple Store for testing, which again is another waste of time and money. So let's calculate...

I received my first i7 on the beginning of December. Flickers started on the 2nd day. Sent it back towards the middle of the month, after being on the phone with Apple trying to resolve the issue (+Please note:+ Apple Customer Care was the best and they did everything they could to assist me). Re-packed the 27-incher with all periph's. It arrived at the location on approximately the 20th of December, Apple ships the second i7 on the 30th and I just received it yesterday. And already I've got an inkling that I have a yellow tinge (took a photo and checked it out in photoShop by turning up the Saturation), but nothing definite I'd just have to continue working with it, until it's obvious.

    That was a whole month...

I got two choices here, have it replaced every time until it's final solved (i.e. taking it to the Apple store for analysis) or get me a refund and hope for things to get solved...

But quite frankly, I'm a little disappointed.

Update from mine: LCD and cable connector replaced yesterday. So far so good. Too early to call it 'fixed' yet but I'll keep the discussion updated.

Thanks Dino, it's week 53. I've been working with it for the better part of today and to be honest, more and more I think it's hypochondria more than anything else. I haven't experienced any flickering or distracting/really serious discoloration on the bottom part. So I'll just keep it that way for now and continue work. Or any symptoms from previous issues for that matter.

I feel, I'm quite ready to bring it to the Apple Store for check-up if need be... Still got my ol' trusty MBPro to help me out in the event of. It would be a big time investment though, which *****.

    best,

s0lar, take of photo of the 2 Gray Bars Test and copy & paste the lower bar right up next to the upper bar. Use Preview. Just to be sure. I hope it's your imagination.

Jason, Sorry to hear! 4 in a row is unacceptable! I can't believe this. That is why I have not returned mine yet. They are using us as Guinea Pigs to weed out their defective machines.

I actually already did, PhotoShopped it.

The lower gray bar actually has a slightly warmer/yellow town to the upper one. So, yes there is a yellow tone to it, but oddly enough nothing noticeable during longer use. Which is a little disappointing, but I'll just wait a little bit more and see if it gets any worse.

    thanks though,
