Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Onyx allows you to delete caches. Maybe the problem is a full cache.

Maybe! But I just don't know. Since I have some time to return mine, I will run some tests in Onyx, checking different Options, a bit at a time, every time my screen Flicker reappears. Thanks!

I'm sure you are on the right track with Onyx. I wish you success Dino 1956!

Thank you citrus101. I really don't know what I'm doing but I just one day decided to run Onyx, after Screen started to Flicker, just to see. I'm always cleaning out files being I like my computers free from Junk. When it worked, everyone said it was a coincidence, but the more & more people I tell, people are starting to think it is possible. And I always tend to believe with Computers, that nothing is Impossible.

Apple does have a guy testing these before they are boxed . Correct?

Dino1956, I sincerely doubt that testing each iMac prior to release is possible. There are just too many coming off the production line. Surely the process is batch sampling? I retired from the world of engineering many years ago but ....

Edit: I meant to say that I am one of the satisfied i7 owners on day 42 of use.

ok. Your probably right. In this case, Random checks, may not work. It was just wishful thinking on my part. Glad you got a Good One! Thanks.

I also am glad! I continue to have a feeling that there is a power issue in this loop but there are so many variables, not least joints (dry?) and connections. The yellow tinge is a quite separate issue and there is only the faintest trace here. According to my eyes, it has not changed in the six weeks of use. I wish everyone having new iMac problems the best of good wishes.

I have also experienced the flickering screen on my 27 inch iMac. Even after applying the firmware update, I continue to have it intermittently. I can't identify any particular app or usage that sparks it. There is a second problem I am also having - the screen will drop/split (vertically) so that the bottom 2 inches appear at the top. Screen shots I have taken of this problem don't show it. If I put the imac to sleep or restart, the picture snaps back into position.

I would love to get this resolved or swapped out with a new one, but until the problem is resolved or the time to order/ship a replacement gets shorter, I guess I'm better off dealing with it. I have confidence that Apple will get it worked out.

Otherwise, this is such a great machine!!! Still a great step up from my 24 inch 2.4.

Dino: sorry, I wasn't clear the first time. I meant that I got my iMac on the 4th of January, not that it was my fourth iMac. Sorry for the confusion. Even still, I think I might just go with the route of getting a refund in the hopes that Apple eventually fixes the problem.

Mine was a week 50 (purchased online, shipped from SHANGHAI, CN), though now since returned and awaiting a replacement early next week.

I can't say I noticed any disconcerting yellow tinge, however, in terms of flickering and screen going black for 1s or so it occurred on two occasions, the same situation, and (maybe) importantly, only those two occasions.

In my case at least it was upon exiting x-plane on both occasions, the 2nd of which was played with the dvd not in the drive, and thus, less than 10mins of play (limit of the game).

I'm no computer expert (and this was my first apple computer) though it did strike me as coincidental.. anyone else played x-plane and experienced flickering afterwards?

Anyway, I hoping someone else can simulate this occurrence

    Kind Regards DLG73UK

    Hello to All,
I have been watching this topic with some concern.... closely following the nuances, opinions and perspectives - as has been provided by all the affected Users and other interested parties.

I do so because I will be receiving my first 27" iMac (C2D) next week (ex China factory).... this being a replacement machine (supplied under Applecare Warranty) for my 18 month old (and much loved) 24" iMac (C2D) which endured many component failures & replacements; Optical Drive (x2) HDD FAN, HDD and finally the Logic Board & Video Card. (Note: all to no avail... in fixing/resolving a persistant "Kernel Panic")>

I'm pleased to report the AppleCare Order made on 27th Dec, 2009 - for my replacement 27" (C2D) iMac - was prepared for shipment on 30th Dec, 2009 and was finally shipped - on 4th Jan 2010.

I would expect it to arrive here in Australia - within the next two days.

This will be my first 27" ..... so its 'Fingers-crossed' that it will arrive OK - and free of this problem.

I just got word from TNT that my iMac is on the Van - for delivery this morning.
I guess today is the day I find out if I was shipped a good one - or otherwise ?

Will post the conclussion later today - after I have made all due assessment. (fingers crossed)

Have a great day.... I know I will, just unboxing and marvelling at this new machine.

Received my iMac 27 inch i7 on December 22nd (but didn't open it until December 30th). Worked fine, installed all the updates immediately including the 1.0 Graphics Firmware update. No screen flickering at all...Until today.

Opening an incident with Apple now.

I had my screen and cable replaced at my local Apple store on 01/04/10. So far NO flickers or Blackouts, etc. I'm hoping the flickering is cured!

Tom, any sign of Yellow? Screen & Cable is the fix, I think.
