Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

No Dino, no yellow tinge (I never had that problem.) and so-far still no flickering or blackouts.

Not to freak you out, but you have a New Screen NOW! I'm sure you checked it. I would!

I have a Question: Does anyone have ANY idea why running Onyx in Automation mode (All Checked), stops the Screen from Flickering for 2-3 days? I guess I could check the List One At a Time, each time the screen flicker starts again, to know which item temporarily stops the Flicker. Any ideas ? BTW, It's no longer just a coincidence. And it's not just because I'm restarting my iMac. I've tested this.

Why don't you run Onyx everyday to prevent flicker happening? Will this be a solution?

Of course this is NOT a solution. I was just curious as to why it helped? I certainly don't plan on running Onyx every day to prevent a brand new product from Flickering.

Sure, it's week 53 (also can see it in my model-info below)...

Not really sure if the internet hypochondria is getting to me, but I've been testing for yellow-tinging for the better part of this morning. Every time I look closer the more I tell myself I see something.

Talking about destroying the joy in having a new machine, huh? I wish it wasn't this way. I guess I'll try my best to enjoy it and attribute any yellow tinges to my imagination for now until it really starts to set in as in various posts around the web...

    cheerio,

I have the 27" (probably around week 48 not sure) and I have the yellow bottom tinge. I decided to wait 5 or 6 months for Apple to work out the display problems and then consider a screen replacement at an Apple Store. It'll be a warranty repair so its free. To be honest with you, I've stopped noticing it unless I'm looking for it. My screen at work on a PC is also uneven and I never noticed that until I read about the iMac issue.

Seriously, unless you are a graphics pro just let it go for awhile and enjoy the machine. Circle back around in a few months while you're still under repair warranty and then ask yourself if you are still so annoyed you need a change. Sending back your iMac for a new one in no way guarantees a better screen from what I have read, and I've read a lot.

One other thing, I found that by calibrating my screen to a cooler color temp the yellow is less noticeable. Also, since I am not a graphics pro I find the cooler screen color appealing as well.

    TVGuy,
That is probably some of the best advice I have heard on this Forum & others. It's not the End of The World! Nobody Died! I too have become consumed by my Yellow Tinge & This Forum & I'm not sure which is worse. I'm still on my first Yellow Tinge/Flicker & I have yet to repair it until I hear something Positive. Thanks
    Dino

    Thanks Dino,
It's hard advice to swallow though for buyers who spent some serious $$$. I too was very upset when I noticed the yellow, only after reading posts about it of course, but after finally accepting fate I am okay with it. I sure would prefer a perfect screen, but I'm convinced the return option isn't effective. Patience is a virtue on the yellow screen since mine is uniform and slight. Flickering might be another issue but luckily I don't have that.

My issue is whether or not I should apply the 27-inch iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0.

I have no flickering. I've read that past Apple graphics firmware updates have slowed the graphics card or affected the fan. There is no evidence that this update does this that I can find, but I haven't read this thread extensively enough.

Does anyone know exactly what this firmware update does?

If it were me & I had no Problems, I probably would not do the Update. For some who did the Update, it seemed to make their Screen Flicker worse after the update. And it did not help most people on here with the Flicker problem. Read Around & You'll See!

    Saw that, thanks again Dino.

I set Software Update to ignore the Graphics Firmware Update 1.0. I am wondering if it prevents future problems though by reducing heat, etc. I guess if it isn't broken, don't fix it. It's a good policy.

You got it! Don't Fix what Isn't Broken! Be Thankful Your Screen is Working Perfectly. How long have you been using your new Mac. My 21.5 NVidia Week 45, had Yellow Tinge out of the Box but screen did not start Flickering until 6 days later. Just something to be aware of. A heads Up, if you will.

Just thought I'd post a quick follow-up -- received my current (third) 27" i7 on 12/23 and it's been powered on and running ever since. So far, not a single flicker (knock on wood). The only issues I have are a slight yellow tinge in the bottom right corner (well within acceptable limits...at least until Apple comes out with a "real" fix) and what looks like a pube under the glass...also in the bottom right corner. It's not a dead pixel (you can easily tell it's a hair if you shine a light directly on it), so I know I could easily remove it myself, but I figure I'll wait until more dust builds up and/or I get the screen replaced for the yellow tinge.

Wait...I know! When the factory worked were peeing on the lower right of my screen, one of them accidently lost one of their short hairs and it got pinned under the glass! Now it's beginning to add up!

I hope you're kidding. If not, take that computer to an Apple Store and tell them to clean your glass immediately, it'll take 5 days at most and tell them you won't stand for more than 1 day. You shouldn't have to look at that.

I have already posted on this topic, but I think I found a way to provoce my screen to flicker. (week 47)

I had 5 days without restart (sleep over night) and no flickering/blackouts, but when I start to play a video game (eve online), after few hours it starts flickering, at frist in slow random flicks, and later more often. after the first-or-two flicks, i turned off the game and next 4 hours nothing, all normal, I started the game again, and leave it for about 3 hours, when I come back, it was flickering with black screen, restart helps.

somebody sad something about some caches, maybe has something with it, at least about flickering.

I'm no computer expert (and this was my first apple computer) though it did strike me as coincidental.. anyone else played x-plane and experienced flickering afterwards?

My week 47 iMac also experienced flickering and blackouts for the first time when playing X-Plane. After rebooting, I didn't have flickering for weeks afterward, until I applied the firmware update. Then it flickered whenever I played the movie "Stranger than Fiction" or just randomly. Apple has since taken that iMac back and are in the process of sending me a new one. I had no idea that replacement iMacs orders are placed in the same queue as retail orders... It is giving me a two week lead time at the moment! I already waited this long once. How did you other folks deal with the wait? My work laptop (an HP) is too painful to use at home, and I already sold my previous iMac.
