Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Seriously, unless you are a graphics pro just let it go for awhile and enjoy the machine. Circle back around in a few months while you're still under repair warranty and then ask yourself if you are still so annoyed you need a change. Sending back your iMac for a new one in no way guarantees a better screen from what I have read, and I've read a lot.

    TVGuy,
That is probably some of the best advice I have heard on this Forum & others. It's not the End of The World! Nobody Died! I too have become consumed by my Yellow Tinge & This Forum & I'm not sure which is worse. I'm still on my first Yellow Tinge/Flicker & I have yet to repair it until I hear something Positive. Thanks

Amazing. If you guys like to waste your money and time on BRAND NEW DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS then more power to you. Don't expect or ask anyone else to do the same. It's my dollar, my vote and I say what I do and what happens with that dollar!

Returned my flickering i7 for a full refund yesterday. At first I felt a little liberated that I would have no more headaches of dealing with this, but now its really just disappointment. Good luck to those of you still trying to get a good machine through exchanges/repairs.

I can kind of see your point, AppleTV, but have to agree with FRENZIED.

If it were me I'd complain immediately because it's my hard-earned cash and I have every right to expect a PERFECT system.

But it's more than that. If a significant number of you delay reporting such defects then it will just delay Apple's corrective actions and systems with this problem will continue to ship far longer. As consumers, if we want the best chance of receiving perfect systems we have to let Apple know they've got a problem ASAP.

I'm just going to keep on at Apple until they finally send me a computer that works properly. I've paid my money to Apple, quite a lot of it, and in return I want a product that isn't broken!

I knew someone was going to report something like this eventually. That is my fear of bringing it to the Apple Repair Center by me. No Apple Stores. So it's one elderly gentlemen's opinion & his eyes may not even see my problem. Let us know if the Video Card swap worked. Thanks.

    Frenzied,
I am definitely first swapping mine out at B&H (store I bought it in) close to the last day I can exchange it. I'm not going to waste my $. I'm just not going to freak out right now only to get another bad machine. Right now it seems people are still getting defective iMacs. It would be a major headache to exchange 4 & 5 times. So I plan to do the one exchange through B&H, & if I get another defective iMac, I will go back to Apple & deal with them. I'm waiting till the last minute, hoping they will get a newr batch. I was not suggesting that anybody should just deal with it. I was just saying relax & wait until they fix the problem, so you can be almost sure of getting a perfect iMac. I don't like to waste my money. Especially on a computer that I expect to last a good five years. And yes of course everyone hear is a grown up & will handle this their own way.

Going towards 48 hours post fix (replaced LCD and cable connector) for mine and all is well so far. Still going to wait a full week of use to call it a success however.

Just looking at the 10.6.3 pre-release notes here:
    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Seed-Notes-Arrive-for-Mac-OS-X-10-6-3-Build-10D52 2-131459.shtml
and noticed this: "GraphicsDrivers - Resolves a panic in GraphicsDrivers."
Just wondering if what we're experiencing with flickering falls into this category.

On some website I read that flickering does not happen if the iMac is booted in 64-bit mode. Anyone tried this yet?

Just thought I'd update; received my replacement just before christmas (original imac was a week 43, replacement is a week 50) and everything's OK with the display. The only difference I've noticed is that boot time is about double. Te week 43 imac booted up in 15-17 seconds, the week 50 takes about 30 seconds.

    Cheers.

A few people seem to have had this problem. Go to System Prefs/Start-up Disk and make sure Mac OS X is selected as the start-up disk then try a restart.

    Paul_31,
What problem does selecting the Started Up Disk & Restarting Solve? Thanks in advance.
