Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

    Hi Dino
Some have found that after the installation of Snow Leopard it sometimes fails to nominate a start up disk so the computer spends extra time looking for clues. By making sure you have selected it the problem of slow start up is normally resolved.

Paul, OK. No, that is the One Problem I'm NOT having. Mine boots in 25 Seconds. Everything works incredible on mine except, I have Yellow Tinge & Intermittent Screen Flicker.

Just thought I'd post a quick follow-up -- received my current (third) 27" i7 on 12/23 and it's been powered on and running ever since. So far, not a single flicker (knock on wood). The only issues I have are a slight yellow tinge in the bottom right corner (well within acceptable limits...at least until Apple comes out with a "real" fix) and what looks like a pube under the glass...also in the bottom right corner. It's not a dead pixel (you can easily tell it's a hair if you shine a light directly on it), so I know I could easily remove it myself, but I figure I'll wait until more dust builds up and/or I get the screen replaced for the yellow tinge.

Wait...I know! When the factory worked were peeing on the lower right of my screen, one of them accidently lost one of their short hairs and it got pinned under the glass! Now it's beginning to add up!

I hope you're kidding. If not, take that computer to an Apple Store and tell them to clean your glass immediately, it'll take 5 days at most and tell them you won't stand for more than 1 day. You shouldn't have to look at that.

I'm partially kidding. There's a hair under there, but (from my experience) it's far too short, straight, and fine to be a pube. It's very difficult to see; in fact, I didn't notice it until I took a flashlight to my computer while it was off to clean the screen. It's too much trouble to take the machine in just for that; like I said, I'll wait until I get more dust and/or Apple comes out with a solid repair for the yellow tinge.

Also, I've noticed that some folks seem to have forum-induced Tourette's syndrome -- in other words, they tend to post three or four times in quick succession. In the interest of forum etiquette and thread readability, please edit your original post when you have a thought you'd like to add rather than adding a completely separate post. Thanks!

You know you can take the Glass Off yourself quite easily & get that hair out. Do a search on YouTube & watch Tutorial. All you need is a suction Cup device like the Suction Cup from a GPS, that sticks to you Windshield. When I saw the Video, I could not believe hoe easy it is to do. You must be Careful not to drop the Glass though.

I've seen the video you're talking about and realize it's pretty easy to remove the glass. What wouldn't be easy is making sure that no additional dust got under there. I don't want the cure to be worse than the disease, so I'll just wait until more dust accumulates and/or I decide to get my yellow screen fixed.

I bought the 27 inch back in November and had the screen flicker problem. I returned it and figured when Apple started to post the refurbs that they problem was over. My refurbished 27 inch came last night with even worse flickers and blackouts. Called Apple and they said they have a fix. They will replace my cord, card, and "possibly the screen". Anyone had this done with any luck? I saw one post that said the cord was the fix. Not sure how that can be possible since after I restart the computer it's fine for about 20 minutes. I'm really hoping this works, otherwise, I'm giving up on imacs for awhile.

I've heard from 2 people on this Forum that had their Screen & Screen Cable replaced & all is working fine so far. Sometimes that may be better than getting a new one that may wind up having some other issue. Like Hard Drive or Screen Audio Noise, or just DOA. Good Luck. Let us know!

Sparkie, Yes both people are Free of Yellow Tinge & Flicker. Well, it's a new Screen & Screen Cable. Tom is one of the people. So everything is good for the last 3 or 4 days, so he's still watching. And there is someone else on here as well. But I can't recall the name.

Make sure they replace the screen & screen cable. The video card fix does not help. Figures, since Yellow Tinge & Flicker are on both the NVidia & ATI iMac.

Hooray...... TNT has just delivered the 27" iMac (5:00pm local time)

So..... friends, it will be an early shower & dinner tonight and then it will be iMac play-time till the wee hours (I suspect)

I am happy to report... that the 27" iMac (C2D) received today (W8953) and has passed all initial testing and inspection - with flying colours. (its Rock-solid)

No flicker, no yellow tinge, no dead pixels, or any other screen problem..... nothing but a perfect Mac. (mind you, the screen calibration was way-off - but that was easily re-adjusted)

I trust this will remain the case.... and for years to come.

Hope all you guys with ongoing unresolved & problems, can get things fixed - real soon.

While repacking my, iMac 27 inch i5, for the 110 mile drive to the nearest UPS depot and eventual replacement, it occurred to me that the styrofoam supports may not be adequate to protect a computer with this large a display. They are large, but only support the four corners.

It would be one thing if the box was labeled, "This Side Up" to insure the screen was never parallel to the ground so the effects of gravity and flexing induced by vibration would be negligible, but in my case it's clear from the scuff marks on the side of the box that it spent a good deal of time laying flat. In situations like that the screen is like a drum skin, resonating with every bump in the road while traveling in the back of a transport truck. I would think that the potential for damage to the screen and any number of connected components could be great. There should have been another brace spanning the center of the screen to dampen the effects of vibration.

There have been reports of clear physical damage, such as cracked screens and disconnected cables. Maybe discoloration, and flickering are more subtle symptoms of damage incurred because of poorly engineered packing materials.

Wouldn't it be funny if all of the issues affecting out wondrous, high tech machines were the result of someone being to stupid to write, "This Side Up, Handle With Care", on the side of a box?
