Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

That could be a possible reason. I just know from plasma screens that they must be transported in vertical position or else the screen would be damaged. But I don't know if this is true for LCD screens too.

I can kind of see your point, AppleTV, but have to agree with FRENZIED.

If it were me I'd complain immediately because it's my hard-earned cash and I have every right to expect a PERFECT system.

But it's more than that. If a significant number of you delay reporting such defects then it will just delay Apple's corrective actions and systems with this problem will continue to ship far longer. As consumers, if we want the best chance of receiving perfect systems we have to let Apple know they've got a problem ASAP.

Super valid points, all. I expect a perfect system too, see my post shortly after the one you quoted. And I agree, if no one complains then the problem won't get fixed, but I'm offering advice that I sat on for awhile for that very reason and finally decided to post for the good of returners driving themselves crazy; replacements don't seem to fix the problem.

My main point in the quoted post was that the yellow tinge is an issue a lot of people have to go out of their way to notice and like a lot of expensive things people buy such as HDTV's and AV Receivers you can drive yourself crazy if you examine them hard enough. I know from experience so people should calm down and give themselves time and see if they really care. Not popular, I know, I didn't think it would be.

I think we all complained & reported it & got a case Number. I told Apple, I'm not exchanging mine, at this point in time, since they have not fixed the problem. The rep replied. You can't listen to what people say on a Forum. So I replied, "You think 1000 people are making up a story about there new iMacs screen being defective?" She then told me, "Well you have a Year Warranty" so whenever your ready, call us back. It's not that we don't care and want to get screwed out of between $1200. & $3000., it's that I don't want to get even more frustrated by exchanging 2-4 rejects in a row. Those are my reasons.Believe me, I'm getting a perfect iMac replacement. I guarantee it! No one, not even Apple's going to steal $1300. from this boy raised in the heart of NYC.

I'm currently at work and I just received my iMac with serial starting W80020. Does it mean it's a week 2 machine? I'll give a full report after I tested it at home tonight ... can't wait

I'm sure you are just dying to go home right now! Week 02 Sounds Promising. The New Year! Let Us Know! These are the weeks that I have been curious about. This will be the tell tale, to see if Apple fixed these things yet.

Well, after over a month I finally received my i5 replacement. Instead of being excited to get it setup I find myself hesitant after continuing to follow this thread. However, I am about to open it up and see what happens. I will let everyone know the details once it is up.

Okay.. I would like to know if anyone out there has bought the quad 27 Imac without any problems. Dropping this kinda coin has me pretty nervous hearing about all these problems.
This would be my first Mac and I was so excited about the possibility of buying one until I did a little research and found all these problems...
I'm deathly afraid of giving a couple thousand bucks to Apple.. waiting 2+ weeks then getting a piece of junk sent to me.
    Any advice?
Have they resolved these issues? Or do I need to just plunk down the cash on a high end Alienware machine and stick to PC?

My Advice ? Wait a couple of weeks. I switched from PC to Mac 3 years ago & I never looked back. But I would hate for you to have a bad experience right from the Get Go. Bad first Impressions, you know!

The "imac.squeaked.com" site is showing already 3 units with issues for week 2. How dissapointing!.
I've been reading this topic since the beginning waiting for an official resolution to make the decision of buying this machine. I remember when units from week 47 were coming out and people thought the nightmare will be gone soon after that.

I'm afraid I won't buy any iMac soon. Maybe in Feb they'll come up with a new and cheaper Mac Pro?... In my dreams!

I never like this "all in one" concept...

    Good luck to everyone!

A couple of weeks?... That's a very optimistic prediction. In November we thought the same and two months have passed.

    Anyway! I hope you're right.
    Cheers!

    Ordered on 2009/12/02, iMAC 27 i7 ATI 4850 4GB.
Received within 2 week, from Shangai, perfect box condition on arrival.
Worked just fine for 2 days, came back from work and found it totally dead but fan spinning.
Called Apple on a sunday evening, took 10 minutes and arranged a replacement.
Couldn't exchange is local Apple store because of "custom build" ?
Took less then 2 weeks, got the replacement one (yesterday).
Working just fine yet, until this afternoon when I noticed significant display flicking.
Based on 13 years computer experience (just enough, but on PC sorry), noticed high heat from top behind, weirdly high heat to me. I put the machine on sleep mode for 45 minutes, cooled back, and here I am writing fingers crossed. First time buy APPLE computer, already have iPhone. Great Apple company, maybe suffering from it's actual popularity and subcontracting to meet demands. Still love the experience, amazing fast machine.
