Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Question: I re-calibrated my Screen & I think by accident, I may have written over the Default iMac Calibration Setting. Is that Possible? And if I did, is there any way for me to get my Default Calibration Setting back? A reset? Thanks in advance!

    Deejay,

My week 45 i5 did not flicker at all until I'd had if for 4 weeks. I remember exactly when the flicker started. I was watching video training on kelbytraining.com and got tired of the monitor dimming on me so I went to the energy saver preference pane and slid all the sliders to "never sleep" for both the monitor and the drive. Flicker started soon thereafter, but I didn't think about my changing settings as being a possible cause. It kept flickering for a few days. I installed the patch. Flickered once more, then I reset the preferences to where they were originally and I haven't had another flicker since. That was maybe a week or more ago. Not saying it's cured. Just another piece of anecdotal evidence to throw in the mix.

Update on my iMac 27'': 48 hours into a replaced LCD and cable connector on it from the local Repair Center. So far so good. No tints of yellow, flickers or black outs. If anyone is having this issue and they don't want to DOA the machine with the wait, the LCD and cable connector replace seems to have worked for me. Granted I'll continue to watch it for a few more days to call it a success but so far so good!

That is awesome. I had rather thought my start up was a little slow, but not really sure....new machine and all, what did I know?

so I checked my star up disk and sure enough, OS X was not selected. I selected it and it cut my start up time in half! Now why would that not be selected by default???

Authorized Apple Dealer/Repair Center. Its 10 minutes away vs. the closest Apple Store which is 2+ hours away. The parts were actually noted on my case ID at apple by engineering apparently. When I called in a few weeks after opening the ticket, after the ROM updated didn't work, the rep commented that engineering had noted note on the ticket that the LCD and cable connector should be replaced on the unit to fix the issue.

    @thxdude

Thank you so much for reporting hows it goes!

YES, it indeed sounds good so far actually!
And I really hope it stays that way !-)

    A couple of questions though.

    1. Did the old LCD screen have the yellow tingle? From LG?

    2. So is this new LCD screen also a LG branded one? Without yellow tingle?

    Cheers, J~G

I am also over 300 Miles from an Apple Store. We have an Authorized Repair Place nearby. I was reluctant to bring it there. But more & more I'm starting to think a Fix might be better than a replacement.

HAHA this thought crossed my mind that's all!

So everyone that want to buy an iMac including myself.

Maybe we just should buy our iMacs, and when they arrive we go to closest Apple store/retailer and ask them to replace the LCD screen and cables.
And there we got our Mac without flickering or yellow tingle etc....

Sorry, don't know what the brand of the LCD was before or after the replacement. The original screen didn't have a yellow tint on it though. It had corrupted graphics and random black outs as described here however they were temporarily fixed with a quick screen sleep (as also mentioned here). The issue would vary: sometimes it would go days between the issue and sometimes it was right after a fresh reboot. If someone knows how to find the manufacture of the LCD let me know and I'll look it up. Otherwise it appears to be that at least some of the machine suffered from defective LCDs straight from the factory. Again, still keeping an eye on mine for a few more days but those in the same situation may want to think about getting the LCD and cable connector replaced.

    Thanks for letting me know.

Well, I belive that ALL new purchased iMacs has LG branded screens, since Apple has a 5 year contract with LG from what i've read.

So therefore i've just wanted to see if the replacement LCD screen Also comes from LG

But as you, I myself don't actually know how to find out the LCD brand, but i'm sure some readers here can tell you how to look it up hopefully.

Anyway, keep posting your progress with the iMac it's really useful infromation I think!

    Thanks, J~G

Hey everyone I hope you're all doing fine. Just wanted to mention that as reluctant as I was I logged in to the apple expert area and documented my complaint receiving a case number. I will be called in the morning by an apple expert at which time I'll explain the issues in more detail and be guided by their recommendations. I was clearly running out of time waiting for a fix. I have 15 days to return it to B&H Video for an exchange and I bought it December 29th. That leaves me with 5 days I could not wait anymore.. Lets see what happens. I'm going to call a friend that works at B&H Video in the morning and ask him to search their database and see if they have new arrivals of the same model I bought. I know this was the last one they had with my configuration and it was built in the 50th week.

    Hey Marky,

If you don't have it already, go to the apple downloads site and download the iStat widget so you can monitor internal temperatures and fan speeds. If your fan speeds don't rise above preset minimums, optic drive 998, hard drive 1100, CPU 939, (approximate), as temperatures increase to scary levels (GPU 80ºc) you likely have the same problem I had. But the back does get fairly warm even when everything is working fine. It's part of the cooling system.

Mines on it's way back to Apple as I write this. Hoping, as everyone in the same position, that it's replacement works better.

Well, I think you are on the spot with the fan speed - it just does NOT increase EVER regardless of the temp...?!
Personally, I still have no problems (almost 2 months now), but I am using my i7 iMac in highly air-conditioning environment.
I have switched it off for the sake of experiment and while the temperatures of individual components were going up, iMac fans stayed at constant speed as mentioned in your post and never "breached" the below mentioned (lowest/highest) values.
It looks to me that Apple have locked the Fan speed... - for what reason I can not understand...
While my i7 iMac (2 months old now) remains flawless, I just wonder now if it is just a time bomb to go off at any time without any warning...
Is there any fan control app available for the latest iMacs..?

Some people, like the post just above yours, have had no problems with their new iMac until after 4 weeks or more. So ... declaring your iMac a success after 48 hours + "a few more days" ... hmmm ... 'just saying.
