Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

There are a few that have posted that they experienced the flickering briefly, and then a long period of time it did not reappear, but in virtually all cases, at some point, it always seems to return.

A defect doesn't just go away by itself.

Contact Apple, they are very quick to agree to replace or repair defective units. Hopefully, you won't have the issue in a later machine.

Pazuita, you finally brought me out of my weeks-long lurking status again.

I couldn't help but respond to the above comment.

While Adam and Eve were indeed involved with "bytes", it was a different kind of bite, and it got us all into trouble.

BTW, I've now passed the two-month mark and I am STILL waiting for my first i7 to arrive.

I'm glad that I've missed the "fun" that everyone else has been having, but I still worry that I may soon find myself in the middle of it all as well when my unit finally does arrive.

    We shall see.

    Warren,
How is it you have waited two months for your first iMac? I ordered and received mine in less than 5 days. Even my replacement only took 3 days?

    Also an update:
My replacement iMac i7 arrived 3 days after I returned my first, on December 28th 2009. It was in perfect condition with no flaws whatsoever. Everything has been running perfect to date, under heavy and cold use. Corporate has still kept in touch to ensure my machine is ok. I have my representative's personal number in case an issue does arise. Satisfied for now.

I was able to salvage a whole contract because of how fast they rushed it. Props to Apple service.... for now.

    Hello Cliff,

If you read further back in this thread, you will discover the shocking answer: Apple does NOT treat AAR's -- Authorized Apple Resellers -- with the same level of professionalism, respect or expediency as it does with online and local Apple Store purchasers. According to comments in this and other threads, many AAR's have been forced to wait until this month to start getting their orders filled. There are other factors involved as well -- such as the fact that we live outside of Apple America, and no Apple Stores exist here -- but that is the gist of it. Even people with defective machines are being given more priority than we are, as your own example bears out.

I am happy to announce that I am updating from my (2nd) 27inch i7 with a 2tb drive and 8g of ram... no cracked screen no DOA so and no yellow tinge (i dont think at least.... if it is there its hardly noticeable...) I am installing adobe and final cut stuff now praying that I dont get a crappy case of the flickers... My powercable to the computer is noticeably different then the last.... could this be the solution????? TUNE IN NEXT WEEK AS I TRANSFER ALL MY FILES FROM THE OTHER MAC TO SEE IF ANY TWITCHING HAS OCCURRED!

is the one to go for.
Works like a charm and It did unlock original iMac settings in it's default values.
    Thanks again,

No one paused the production for 2 weeks (including Apple), sorry they did (for a while) actually - due to X-Mas.
BTW; If you have a problem with your iMac - just return it or get it fixed = very simple process and Apple will not argue or dispute any claims.
If still not happy, obtain one of many Windows 7 based contraptions and shut up.

Perhaps you lack a life and enjoy transferring files between defective units all day, but I don't. Therefore I'm grateful to receive feedback from the people who've gone through the whole returning process.

    How about this guys?

I've got the 'shifted screen/startbar' symptom while booting windows 7.
My login screen was messed BUT once I entered the password, the windows background appeared correctly.

Ouch. Yesterday I was excited to see that my replacement 27" iMac was prepared for shipment, but today I am much less excited due to the continued bad experiences of folks such as yourself. Other than power cables being different on the latest units being shipped, it sounds like nothing has changed.

When I was at the Apple Store on Sunday, I noticed there was only one 27" iMac in the entire store. I checked and it was made in week 39 -- before they were even announced. My guess is if they had any more, they'd be returning them also.

well ive been to the apple store, they were very helpful as always!!

i swapped it out for a week 49 unit...... so far so good just migrated my files across

only downside so far is that i have a seagate hdd, which is slightly audible but not too bad to be fair!

Good Luck. I have a 500GB Seagate & it's completely silent. In fact my entire iMac has always been so quiet, you can never tell it's on.

    thanks!

    fingers crossed no flicker!

this one seems a tad slower than my old one though??

anyway screen looks pretty darn good, there may be a very very slight tint at the bottom but maybe im just so paranoid about it!

im sure they've warmed the screens up a bit too! when i hold my iphone 3gs next to it it looks similar, when i hold my iphone 3g next to my macbook they look similar! and the differences between the screens are similar to the iphone ones.

another thing! this one runs cooler..... the previous ones power supply ran at 70c this ones sitting around the 62c and the hard disk is generally sitting 10c cooler than what my western digital one did

I can vouch for the cable screen replacement fix! Still no flickering or blackouts. I have the same old power plug that came with the week 49 i7

    Replacement 01.04.10 now 01.08.10!
