Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Hello everyone just wanted to chime in and let you all know that i'm about to rap up this bad boy and take it back to B&H while i'm at work tomorrow morning. I really hate going through all of this just to find out that the machine I get is the same or even worse. I'm just glad I have all of my stuff backed up in an external hard drive via time machine.

What do you all think of this, I opened quicktime and started a screen capture video while the display was going crazy. I recorded about 3 minutes of video and then I stopped the recorder. When I played the video clip back it played perfect and none of the flickers or blackouts were recorded. Could this mean that the video card is fine and it's the screen that's the culprit? hmm

Dino, if I were you I would not wait that long to call B&H and get an RMA number. You only have 15 days to return the unit. I'll let you all know how everything works out.

Rick......wish me luck, i'm going to need it.

After two weeks of proper operation, my unit started to present the flickering issue. I was not able to replicate it properly, but it has been happening more often.

I will! It Sounds like the Person I got on the Phone from B&H misinformed me due to your reply. I was told as long as I got the RMA approved by Jan 18th, I could then send it out anytime up until Jan 18th.. Let me know what the deal is if you can, via my email. dino1956@aim.com

    You are correct Rick,
This fact was mentioned earlier in this thread.
It's proof that the card is fine since Quicktime makes the capture directly from the card and not after the image as been displayed on screen.
So the video signal coming out of the card is fine and the problem is somewhere on the way to the screen or the screen itself.
People here have said it before, there is no way the same exact problem could be present on two different cards from different makers, so it's definitely not the cards that are the culprits.

SlickRick, Please Reply. Why are you telling me to call B&H ASAP. Do you know something I don't. CR Rep (from B&H) on Phone told me as long as I got the RMA Approved by Jan 18th, I was good. Is that not true? Again, Please Reply. Your the only one on here who bought theirs from B&H besides me.

Ok, I picked up new computer from B&H video. The serial number is w8951 so I believe it's week 51 which is newer than the one I has before. I check it all out when I get home from work and post the results. Fingers crossed.

    Rick.

Ps. They would have given me a refund if I wanted one.

The only reason I was telling to look into it is because the return policy states that you have 15 days to return in for an exchange. Why are you holding on let it go. Get a new one.

OK guys, just an update ... one month and going strong ... week 50 build. Never are sure if im in the clear but the possibility of the screen and or cable are the culprit are actually reassuring. Im out of the return period so i guess its in the hands of applecare if anything goes wrong but rock solid so far.

    Sparkie. Fingers Crossed. Good Luck.

Week 45 is my week. Mine is 21.5 NVidia Seagate Hard Drive. My Seagate HD has been from day one has been quieter than a mouse. In fact, my iMac is just as quiet as my Mac Mini.

I got the OK from B&H today. I can get my RMA by Jan 18th, & send mine back for an exchange. By then, who knows what week I'll get.

I'm on my 3rd i7 as well, although the first one was damaged in shipping so I can not say if the screen flickered.
I received the 3rd machine two days ago and within 4 hours of operation the 1-3" thick horizontal band of flickering began (screen location and band thickness changes) followed by intermittent, but brief blackouts. Same as the second machine.
At this point I dread getting another one until the issue is identified and resolved. "Apple" is working with me on the issue, though...
