Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

so far i think theres a very very very slight tinge in the right hand 3rd about an inch and a half wide, its really nothing that going to bother me anyway!

just hope to avoid the flicker really! if this flickers its going end of.

sparkie, the Week 45 had a substantial amount of Yellow Tinge iMacs. I was ready to live with mine until the screen started to Flicker after 5 days of use. It's flickering as I type.

And just to add, my little Onyx trick stopped helping the Flicker temporarily. It's now flickering after just running it. So I guess mine is getting worse.

I have to say that I started experiencing this flickering problem since I got the computer in mid December. I posted on here about my experiences and thoughts and since then (approx a week ago) I have turned down my screens brightness down to about the 50 percent mark and have yet to see a flicker. The computer also seems a lot cooler when feeling by the vent at the top. I wonder what everyone who is experiencing the flickering has their brightness level at. The only problem that has returned for me this week was when using Safari, my iMac turned itself off all of a sudden and then restarted by itself. Dunno if this is related to the problem that causes the flickering but once again I have not seen the flickering with the lower brightness setting. Hope this info helps in finding the cause of the problem.

I tried turning down brightness to 50% but my Screen still Flickers. My eyes could not deal with it at 50%. I use my screen 4 notches down from Full. That Brightness Setting is perfect for my eyes. Thanks anyway.

****, oh well. I thought I was on to something. I just hope when this issue is finally resolved that it's a easy fix cause if it isn't I want a new one.

Brought my iMac i7 to the Apple store Friday night (1/8) for a replacement. They wanted me to show them the flicker but I told them it could happen in a few minutes or I could be sitting here for a few days before it does. I ordered it on 10/30, received it on 12/22, turned it on/migrated it on 1/2: noticed the flicker on the 1/3. Called AppleCare on 1/5 and they recommend me bringing it back to the store and said, "most likely they'll replace it." Didn't see these boards and the problem until after I called. When I brought it back, was told it will take a few weeks before the replacement arrives. I didn't want to get attached to the machine so wanted to unload it ASAP.

I'm calling B&H tomorrow & sending this back. I'm not really sure if I should even exchange it or just get a Refund. A refund was not on my mind until my GF gave me the Practical Reason. "If there are so many defective ones, why not wait until they fix the Problem, before buying another one." Her reasoning is right on. But now I'm so attached to this Yellow Eyed Flicker Monster. And the little boy in me wants to have his toy. So I have to decide, exchange or refund. This would only be my first exchange. But after hearing every one else's bad luck, I'm apprehensive & don't know if I feel lucky. Then I think, what the ****, I'll do one exchange & take a chance. Decisions, Decisions...I have to be honest. I may have kept it, if all it had was the slight Yellow tinge but once the Flickering started & has gotten worse today, there is no way. I unplugged all my Peripherals & am just running KB, Mouse & using Airport. I thought unplugging everything might stop flicker. It did not stop it.

    Hello everybody!!!

This is Raúl from Madrid (Spain), i will resume my first experience purchasing and imac.

Here in Spain apple is becoming popular because ipod, iphones, etc but still mac os x, imac, mac minis are unknown to most people. I had a great experience with my iphone and i was sick of suffering all kinds of troubles with windows, so decided to change my packard bell notebook for an imac 27 core duo 3,06 ghz.

i purchased on black monday, delivered on december 8, was a 48 week and flickered from the second day. After talking with applecare i decided returning for a new one, i was reported by email that new one would come on january 19, i was happy thinking that the problem would be solved for that time. The new imac came on january 07 it´s a 53 week (W89530415PM) and flicker from the first day, not that much as my first one but flicker randomly.
I must say despite the flicker it´s the best computer i have ever had, snow leopard it´s just amazing and applecare offered me the best service i remember.
I absolutely in love with this machine, but still flicker occasionally, i don´t know what to do.

    Un fuerte abrazo a todos.

    Raúl.
