Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

    @gingeralbert

Report and return your unit asap for a refund and wait until Apple resolve the issue. In my experience you are wasting your time with an exchange as i'm on my second faulty unit - sending it back for a refund! Do not hold onto the unit any longer without notifying Comet, the screen fault could even worsen over time and become unusable. Nip it in the bud gingeralbert and return your faulty Mac!

Good advice AGP. I was waiting until Black Friday to place an order for an iMac i7 however I have now changed my mind. Until Apple admits the problem and until I am assured that the problem is corrected, I will not place my order.

In the interim, I am enjoying my rock solid PC running Windows 7 which is also rock solid.

I would be furious if I purchased a new iMac and experienced the screen flickering problems. Obviously there is a problem, Apple knows that there is a problem and they are stonewalling the issue.

The screen flickering problem is all over YouTube. Apple iMac 27" Screen Flicker/Distortion Issue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jWlepBzVMs

I had this exact problem- flicker, tearing, going black, as seen in the videos here the morning after I set my iMac up after waking it from sleep.. It went on all morning until I did a PRAM reset http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 ( command + option + p + r on start up ) - I didn't know it would restart from this, so I actually did it three times in a row, but I have been three days without a single flicker... Several restarts, sleep mode, user changes, and just about every other normal use situation I've thrown at it. YMMV

Issue came back, taking it back to the store and exchanging it. Since it's within my 14 days, I should be able to exchange it without much hassle?

Got and iMac 27 myself as well and the problem appeared the first time days after purchase. I got only one flickering, rebooted and never saw it again until today (12 days after purchase). I called the shop in Brussels where I bought the iMac from and they told me they know the issue, asked me to take the iMac there, they will send it to the Repair shop, change the graphics card and it will be back in less than seven days.

I told them about the 14 days period of immediate replacement but they said that this doesn't apply to Belgium (weird!) and that even if it did they are out of stock right now and it would take the same amount of time to send a new one.

Apparently, I was surprised that he knew the problem and suggested the replacement of the graphics card. They seem to know that this is a hardware issue after all.

Sorry, but what you were told is simply BS! Of course you have the right to have it replaced, because it's faulty, not because you do or don't have a 14 day grace period. For me this just sets a bad precedent when we allow faulty items so recently purchased to be repaired rather than replaced. However, I have a shipping date of Dec 1st for my replacement, so if it truly is within 7 days then sometimes it may be better to make an exception.

I totally agree. The product is faulty. You are entitled to a replacement. Especially in the EU (Nanny State and all that).

Just had the flickering and screen turning black. Plus a complete shift in the picture, my 'Dock' actually ended up at the top of the screen divided by a half an inch white patterned bar. The weirdest part is to scroll to the dock I still had to scroll to the bottom of the screen and my cursor would come from the top of the screen. Anyway I put the imac to sleep and turned it back on and it was fine. I've also reset the PRAM and run the Hardware test with no issues. Everything has been fine since, but I also haven't used the machine for any serious lengths of time. Do you guys think I should just exchange it for a new model?

Yes, get a new one (based on what other people have said over the last 24hours about stopping making the machines etc).

That is why I haven't replaced mine yet. Waiting to hear what the fix / issue is before getting it replaced.

I have however raised a call (and have the ref number) with Applecare and agreed on this course of action (with a wee Irish fella on 2nd level support) to help prevent any issues when it comes to being replaced.

you see before I have replaced my first 27 iMac I spend good few hours in total with Apple Care. I had few days left and I could wait but does it make any sense? In AppleCare they have told me as well that percentage of flickering Imacs it is not that high. I think all of new Imac customers has this issue?
I know I am repeating myself, but do you know anybody who has iMac longer then 14 days and have no issue like that whatsoever?

good to know, because mine is doing the same thing. Should I call apple care first, or just take it back to the store in Westlake?

Yes, the apple policy is that within your 14 days you are allowed to return your product essentially no questions asked. Though, they will want to run through your machine while you're there to see if they can cause the problem again or find a solution and typically they will charge you a restocking fee. However, due to the well known issue of the iMac, your restocking fee should be waived.

If you can capture your flicker issues on camera, it helps since it's not that easy to replicate.

I'm starting to feel like I don't even want a replacement machine or at least from the same batch, if some have picked up their second or even third unit and still have issues it's not worth it. I'd rather wait until all the bugs get worked out. Or even wait for a refurb to show up since it sounds like there are going to be a fair amount of them. I'm going to call Apple Care tonight to see if they can pre-authorize a return/refund. Hey maybe I'll even hold out for an i7. Out of curiosity, has anyone had any luck from some of the possible solutions? PRAM, clear SMC, Re-Install OS, change power source etc...?

I brought home my new imac from the Apple Store on 11/14. I started getting the flickering on 11/17. Called them on 11/18. It appears they're aware of the problem and they're going to be replacing it. Will update on the status of the new computer when we have it up and running.

I'm going to jump way out on a limb here and suggest that this is a power problem. The one thing about being old and in this business 40 years is that I keep seeing the same things happen over and over. Normally the ground wire is the issue. Those in the US can test this by buying a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter ($1) or an extension cord that is 3 prong to 2 prong.

I don't suggest running the system without ground except to test for the problem. I would be interested if anyone could test and report back.

I have an i7 but am not experiencing this issue, then again I'm certain I have noise free power.
