Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Although you may be disappointed by the extra wait time. Maybe this is a good thing. Maybe they are working things out & you will both get the Perfect iMac you want. Maybe they just put a stop to shipping iLemon replacements. A delay could be a blessing. You've heard the saying "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait". This could be a good thing!

I don't mind waiting for a better computer. I do mind being lied to multiple times by Apple, however. The Apple Store Genius said my replacement would arrive in a few days. The Applecare Customer Care person said it would take 3-4 days. Here I am, eight days later and my replacement has been "prepared for shipment" while being told from Applecare that it "wasn't built yet". Then it mysteriously reverts to "not yet shipped" once I complain on this forum about it. Now it just changed back to "prepared for shipment" again. Not only are the new iMacs out of process control, so is the return/exchange process.

If Apple told me "it's going to take three weeks to get you a replacement", I would have understood. Apple, please don't over-promise and then under-deliver. Sorry for the rant everyone, but this has been my experience so far.

No you have reason to rant. They should not tell you one thing, then do another. Guess What? I haven't had a flicker all day. Maybe the heat is causing the solder pints to settle in & bond better. I'm sure tomorrow it'll flicker like a Super 8 Film Projector. Uptime: 13 hrs. 53 Min.

Hello everyone I'm back and I'm so nervous I can't sleep. It's 4:35am here in New York and I just unpacked the computer and set it up. So far so good but who the **** knows! A few things, I notice that I have a Western Digital Hard drive and the firmware is already updated. Good signs I have a newer model which means they were aware of the problem. But as we all know that doesn't mean crap! I'm afraid it's going to flicker any moment. I let you all know tomorrow or should I say later in the day.

    Rick.

I'm trying to recall whether I've read or participated in a thread on any subject anywhere with less signal and more noise. :>)

    Press on. Regardless.

Today's update: they just shipped my first replacement 27" iMac i7. The only problem is that Apple shipped it via FedEx "International Economy Distribution" rather than priority like they said they would. More lies... Anyway, I should be receiving it next Tuesday, and will post another update or two after working with it for a while. Signing out for now.

Refurbs of the 27" models are now available on the mac store:

    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTY0MjUwOTE

This could be an indication that they at least know what the problem is and seem to know the cure.

My wild guess was previously that it was a heating issue but considering the working fixes that have occurred with screen+cable replacement im leaning towards a large batch of faulty screens that was shipped out. People sending their imacs in might have gotten a new one that was from a faulty batch and/or if they replaced the screen it might have been flickering but this would perhaps not show up under a short testing period.

Consider that the time between a) identifying a problem to b) fixing it would reasonably take some time. example:

faulty screens are identified by users around the world . this causes apple to release a software fix that seemed to solve some screens, others got worse, some stayed the same. they then have to examine the faulty screens and identify the problem. consider that the flickering might be something that is only visible whilst plugged in into a computer, not during a regular power-on test of screens.

they then have to make the manufacturer aware of the problem and the manufacturer in turn has to locate and fix the production of the faulty screens. consider here that LG might be buying components from several places and other manufacturers.

then we have to wait for the batch of faulty screens to be a) identified by manufacturer or b) customers and thereby get these out of production. after this they can start producing faulty free screens after testing the newly produced ones and then install these into new computers that might arrive on shelves a long time since there are still lots of Imacs out there.

if considering this chain i for one am not surprised that people are still recieving faulty screens. important: this is not saying that this is acceptable! but i do think that the timetable to fix this kind of issue extends to so many different actors and possibilities that a "quick" fix of this problem is impossible.
