Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Dave_Allen, Wow, that is not good news. That's almost 2 months without a flicker. Does it still Flicker when your not Gaming, since it started flickering? Since it's a custom built, I'd get it Repaired by Apple. Replace Screen & Screen Cable. That seems to fix it, judging by people on here. Good Luck!
P.S. I wish I had an Apple Store 50 Miles away. 300 Miles for me.

Got back a couple of hours ago from having my screen and cable changed. Screen is good, no dead pixels or yellowing and it hasn't flickered yet (hope it stays that way).

Paul_31, That seems to be the fix. Good Luck! Do you instruct them to replace Screen & Cable or did they know already to do it? Thanks.

    Hi Dino
I started a case with AppleCare as soon as I got the flickers in early November. In short, they got me to do a 'capture' of my system for their analysis of the problem. They concluded that the LCD cable needed reseating which I had done and it made no difference. I also applied the firmware update which made no difference. I reported back and they then said after further analysis I needed to have two parts replaced - the screen and the cable. It took a month for the service centre nearest me to get the screen, hence the delay, but it is at last now done. Just hope it turns out to be a permanent solution. I must say that AppleCare have been very helpful in my case so if resolves it a big thumbs up to them. (Still hasn't flickered - fingers and everything crossed).

I have been operating my new iMac since early November without incident, but last night I experienced this flicker issue for the first time

... and this is my fear: What if it is a question of time until all new iMacs start to flicker. I know I'm repeating here myself, but this is my big fear. Pazuita, we have to wait a little bit with numbers and facts. Maybe you're right, when you say we make here to much noise for a problem that is not so big as it seems, but wait ... we have to see, if all good ones are really good ones.

Paul ... fingers crossed for you ... we have seen in this thread, that the fix you have done works. Good Luck and stay with us!

I guess we are all going to have to make sure we buy Applecare with these iMacs. We can't predict the future of any Electronic product. Some just die prematurely. f you have Applecare for 3 years, at least you know your covered. Anything over 3 years, your on your own. Personally, I keep my computers for 5+ Years & they are all working perfectly, including 3 PC's..

My sons are laughing about me, because of my efforts to contact Apple ... common Apple, let them be quiet!
