Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

    hi mate,

i returned my 1st machine week 48 on: 8/1/10, the 2nd one (week 49) flickered out of the box so went back on the sunday 10/1/10 now im on my 3rd imac (week 45) which is tinged and i predict will flicker, my 1st one lasted almost 3 weeks before starting to flicker.

im now considering returning for a refund and forgetting it as im feeling crapped on by apple to be honest.

I talked with an apple 'expert' on the phone about the problem. She said the problem was a known issue but didn't go into detail. My imac currently has the flickering/blackout problem and a slight yellow tinge at the bottom. I know of a private computer repair business near me that has some kind of contract with apple. Anyway, they accept applecare and I'm thinking I'll take the machine there to see if they can pinpoint the problem....and fix it.

    sparkie:

Why don't you take this one in to the Apple store and have them replace the screen and cable? This fixed my flickering. While at the store test it in the store for the yellow tinge before you take it home. It is a great computer!

Guys, Gizmodo has an update today:

    http://gizmodo.com/5447250/the-faulty-imac-saga-chapter-1

Apparently, his iMac (after having already been replaced) just simply stopped booting altogether. That is a terrible sign. And pazuita, you can add Mark Wilson to your list of unluckiest, as he would be receiving yet another iMac, but instead has decided to get a refund.

Mark is also going to post every Wednesday on the site so stay tuned. Anyone who has a problem with their iMac should definitely email Mark Wilson of Gizmodo (mark@gizmodo.com) and explain your situation (photos/video evidence, how many replacements, experience with Apple employees, etc) so he gets a more accurate headcount and can make it public.

ps. pazuita, did you add dxgriffiths to your 'unluckiest' list? And how exactly are you confirming their reports? Just because someone doesn't have a posting history may just mean that it's their first time to the forum about an issue, it certainly doesn't mean a confirmation one way or the other. Also, I'd note their user names to your list as well just for reference purposes.

I apologize in advance for this totally off-topic response, but I just couldn't resist answering the above question with some lyrics from one of my all-time favorite progressive rock bands -- the Moody Blues!

    So here is my/their answer:

I know you're out there somewhere
    Somewhere somewhere
I know you're out there somewhere
Somewhere you can hear my voice
I know I'll find you somehow
    Somehow somehow
I know I'll find you somehow
And somehow I'll return again to you

So, yes, I am here, and waiting to see if anything really happens with this online meeting.

Does anyone have a shot of their yellow tinge. I checked mine at http://imac.squeaked.com/test.php and to me it looks like it has a yellow tinge but I would like to compare against someone else.

    Thanks

I can tell you have gotten that warm & fuzzy feeling & you love your machine now so much, that you want others to experience your joy. I'm glad it worked out for you Tom. You could be avoiding us losers by now, but you keep helping out. Thanks!

About a week ago, I ordered a 27" iMac. I didn't know about this problem until today. I'm a designer for a living, so a yellowed screen is something that I can't deal with. Dealing with flickering would be even worse.

It seems there are a lot of people wondering if the problem is still happening in new iMacs. It's scheduled to arrive on Friday, Jan 22nd. I'll be posting back here that night with an update.

don, Here you Go. I copy & pasted the bottom bar to the middle in preview, so you can compare the difference side by side.

I too have been reading this thread since its inception, sitting on the fence, waiting to pull the trigger on my first-ever Mac purchase, an imac i7. I actually believe I'm getting some entertainment value from reading everyone's comments while waiting for that feeling that it's OK to order and expect a pristine imac. I think I can still hold out a little longer. I appreciate all posts, but especially those of the routine visitors (you know who you are) that are here posting daily. Your sharing what appears to be all your thoughts on these issues gives me comfort that my ultimate decision will be based on reliable information.

Based on the data from this site, the number of iMacs with bad screens seems to be going down. But there could be a lot of other reasons for this. I'd take it with a grain of salt.

thats a good option tom i suppose, thing is im sick of carrying it about, im sick of seeing the apple store (never thought id say that) im sick of being gawped at by all the shopping centre "hoodies" carrying round a £1600 imac.

for the first time ever, im actually really really tempted just to tell apple to stick this imac..... ive still got my macbook pro and could maybe save for a macpro or something else. if apple would just let us all know whats going on, because a lot of people wont take the risk and will return it, an option im considering as my 14 days are tick tocking away
