Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

So like I've posted some time ago on this forum I had a 27'' i7 (week 52 batch) with bad flickering and cut-offs of the screen. I just got my replacement (week 53 batch). It came back in the same box as the one I gave back, so obviously only the iMac itself was replaced. So far no flickers or cut-offs, but a slight yellow tinge from bottom to top of the screen. I'll leave the iMac running a few hours and will be reporting how it behaves... Wish me luck!

Question: Apple store now has refurbished 21 and 27 inch imac's. TO avoid this problem, would it be a good bet to get one of these? Save $200 and it has been bench tested to sell as refurbished. Has same warranty as new. Any thoughts on this?

I bought my 27",i7 iMac on 12/05/09. Today, I still don't have it and my local reseller said that he received notice that it is ready, but hasn't shipped. I'm kind of glad it took so long, but am still worried I might get a defective one. I'm a photographer and I want that display to be 100%. Actually this will be my first Mac and I am switching, because of the display and to try Mac out. Keeping my fingers crossed that I do not have to go through the hassle some of the people in this thread have. Hope all your iMac's are 100% soon!

Well, of course it is a gamble. The only difference compared to December: Meanwhile Apple's repair people are nearly by routine exchanging parts as mentioned above: LCD and cable.

This must ring a bell somewhere. The demand for these spare parts, being ordered for brand new machines, must be astonishing for Apple center to say the least. Why now bothering to repair a lot of Macs, which is not exactly cheap, but still selling new ones with the old LCDs and cables? They will have to expect those customers standing on their doormat within days to claim repair. Wouldn't make sense, to me at least.

So, I think we have a decent chance. If not, back it goes...

There was at least one report on this Thread or another, where a person tried that & got a bad refurb. But personally, I would think they would need to test any refurb before they box it. Just my 2 Cents, I don't know for sure.

    HELLO EVERYONE!

Now that I have your attention I just wanted to update you guys and gals a little. I returned my first IMac to B&H video sunday and got a new one. I did not set it up till monday evening. It took several hours transferring all of my photos and apps. While that was going on I did minimal surfing and packing up my old G5 Quad and monitor which I sold on E-bay. I would say the computer was on for 5 hours. No problems other than it froze on one occasion while transferring 90gigs of stuff to one of my partitions.

On Tuesday I had the computer on about 8 to 10 hours backing up and doing stuff on it. No problems then either. I turned it on briefly,1 hour, yesterday and installed parallels 5 and windows vista. I have to say not bad so far. I'm still a little apprehensive but so far so good.

I'm just waiting for the **** thing to punch me in the face because that's exactly how it feels when you first see this in a new computer. Time will tell....

I have a week 51 build and I wanted to know how did we come up with this number being the week it was built. Who discovered the serial number break down?

Sorry for the long post but I know Dino has been waiting for me to post for a while.

    Rick.

Hey SlickRick, I thought you forgot about me. That's Good News So Far. So you may have received a perfect one. Great to hear. I just mentioned you in a post I made today. Anyway, sent my 21.5 NVidia Week 45 back to B&H for an exchange. They should receive it tomorrow. Probably won't get to sending me a new one out until next Week. I just hope I'm as Lucky as you my friend. So no Yellow or Flicker. No Dead Pixels, No Loud Hard Drive, No Screen Noise? That's a good one you got there. Thanks so much for posting back with me in mind. I will of course let everyone know, the day I get mine, on it's condition.

I see a lot of people stopped posting here. Either they got fed up, got a refund or they got a good replacement or repair.

I, for one, grew tired of lugging my 27" to and from the Apple Store (on my third (week 52) flickering iMac, second one went in for attempted repairs twice). I am waiting for a few weeks (months?) until Apple can actually effect a repair before I try again.

On a side note, I am getting a different repair on this second replacement iMac -- the right speaker is defective. On my first replacement iMac, the keyboard was defective. I'm getting to know the Geniuses at the Apple Store really, really well.

Hi SlikRick just go to chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html and enter the serial number. You'll get quite some information about your iMac.

dr.forbin, If all that was defective was your Keyboard, how come they couldn't just give you a replacement Keyboard??? It sounds like you may have possibly had a good iMac the 1st time. With all this that is going on, someone could have made an executive decision & just give you a new Keyboard off the Shelf.

    Dino,

the keyboard was not all that was defective. Each iMac also had (and the current has) the flickering/tearing/blackout problem.
