Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

I have a week 52 machine delivered after the holidays and it too has the flickering problem (and flickers as I type). I am working with an Apple engineer, sending her Data Capture and a video of the problem (and she no longer returns my call!) - My question is this: Is Apple purposefully sending out these machines, knowing there is a major issue, or is the problem simply isolated? The employees at my Apple Store have had to remove 2 out of 3 machines on the display floor....

Of course Apple is "purposely" sending out defective machines. To do otherwise would require producing, testing, and applying some sort of procedure that would
run each machine leaving the assembly line to a QC check that would find those machines with the faulty monitors and cables, if that is indeed the fault.

spurv2, seems as if you were speaking to the wind. Pity there is no software marking certain post as "unreadable" automatically.

Because some really are. Adds to the flickering unnecessarily...

I just can not believe that this totally useless topic, occupied by a handful of (multi) posters is still going on.
BTW; I have problems with my week 47 2 months old iMac as well - here is the list:

    1. No dead pixels (screen and camera).
    2. No "flickering" of the screen.
    3. No yellowing.
    4. No "funny" noises.
    5. No overheating.

    Have I missed anything..?
Bragging here about your problems will NOT fix your iMac - let Apple fix it for you instead - they will fix it eventually.
Replacing faulty iMacs with iMacs seems to me counterproductive - get it repaired instead.
It looks like Display and Cable replacement does the trick.

    Hi Dino,
Thought I would wait a couple days before responding.
Have not yet seen this recur during gaming or regular use of CS.
This issue is about as random as it gets.
I will update forum on repair/replacement or whatever.
300 miles? Ouch! Luckily a new store opened in Portland, Maine just in the past year or so. Before that I would have had to travel to Boston.

If I wanted a second hand imac, I would get it on ebay.
So this is the deal:- Spend £1600 and then get it repaired...
That's the worst deal I've ever heard of!!!!
    WE MUST BE MUGS!

    Hi atlatnesiti,

it was this "totally useless" topic finding out, that Display and Cable replacement does the trick, nobody else did inform us about that ... and it was this "totally useless" topic helping me to wait a little bit with my order ... therefore ... no need to get sarcastic with a sympathetic handful of "multi-posters".

and still dreaming of an iMac 27" 4GB 2TB i7

Thing is it's got to Be better in one place surely??

You'd all be moaning if there was loads of threads made every day!

It's the Internet! Some think were moaning others don't. If it bothers you stay out of the thread??

I don't get people coming out of their way to moan..... Just ignore it if troubles you so much!

And I agree £1600 for a mac that's going to have to be opened up and fixed is stupid!

    News update to my order.

    I ordered an i7 on Dec. 29.
Until 'couple of minutes ago it should've been built by Jan 15 and delivered by Jan 26.
    Checked my order status.
Now it says built by Jan 29 and delivered by Feb 05.

Hate to wait over a month for my iMac, but hopefully it'll be flawless!

Thanks for the repeat of the fanboy position, we of course need to have it inserted every few pages, and I see you're happy to do that.

New people are still posting here that they've gotten new machines with the problem almost every day, and people are posting about new potential solutions tried, but of course, you wouldn't want to hear that so why bother actually reading the thread, just announce that it's the same people posting over and over. We have heard you, thanks for playing.

First imac I had was a G5. Since then I had all the available models up to now. My latest is an i7. Just got it yesterday.
Generally speaking all the past models were fine. Latest model (27in i7) would only work for a few minutes then black screen and flickering irregularly then displays just black screen. Restart or cold boot would yield nothing.
I am returning it to the reseller today to face further problems. I should have read these postings earlier before my purchase!
Forums such as these are great so you know what's going on. The useless ones are simply saying theirs are great with no problems etc. etc. With so many postings/reported same issues Apple must have known about the problems before.
