Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Dino......your situation is really not that unique....remember that I have intentionally delayed a replacement as well.

The nearest Apple store to me is more than 2 1/2 hrs away. There is no authorized repair service in my area, so I have even fewer choices than you do. If repairs were an option, I would have tried that already, replacement is my only option.

It was not naive of you to believe that Apple would resolve the issue quickly. That is what Apple has always done, and even with this issue, they are still trying to do the right thing.

I do feel that you, and I were mislead by this forum a bit, and if it were not for this forum, neither of us would have delayed getting a replacement for so long. This forum has fed a certain amount of paranoia in a lot of us, since it is only a source for negative comments, with little on the positive side. Users with good machines simply do not come here to post, and we get a false impression of the scope of the problem.

The odds of getting a faulty replacement are very slim. Even if you do, Apple will make it right. Remember the flat tire factor. You never get one till you talk about it.

Since you have been a Mac user for "only three years" answer me this.

Prior to this issue with your 21.5..........

Has there ever been a time in that three years that Apple has failed to resolve an issue for you?
In that three years, have you even had an issue that required resolution?

The answer to those two questions is why most of us continue to buy Apple products.

And please, please, please keep posting.

If you don't, I'll end up occupying half of this forum by myself.

I'm more than glad to do this. Like I posted a few pages up, I've got a replacement 27'' i7 (batch week 53 for batch week 52). It still does what it should and apart from a slightly noticeable yellow tinge there's nothing suspicious to report (apart from the videocamera sitting within reach ready to take footage of strange behavior for evidence).

A word concerning display quality: If you compare a EIZO CG301W with a similar resolution of 2560 x 1600 Pixel which sets you back about $ 4'000 to $ 4'500 and considering that a 27'' i7 as a whole costs about $ 2'700, it's obvious that apple did (could) not choose top notch displays. However this does not justify flickering, cut-offs and the like.

    it's me again.

just wanted to clarify my point.

i ordered an i7 on dec 29 when the when shipping time was 2 weeks hoping to get a week 02 or 03 with the flickering issue already solved.

now that the two weeks have gone by my order status was set up from jan 15 to jan 29 (eta feb 05).

just an hour ago i received a mail from apple stating that due to high demand (i believe that's what they have to say) i'll have to wait 7 days (maybe less) till my machine is going to be shipped.

as shipping time on the apple store website still is two weeks but mine is now more than 3 weeks in total i hope they finally found a solution for the flicker problem.

maybe it's really the cable and/or the screen. or whatever else. my hope is they finally ship flicker free units.

i'll keep you up to date if it's really going to be that way.

Until 'couple of minutes ago it should've been built by Jan 15 and delivered by Jan 26.
    Checked my order status.
Now it says built by Jan 29 and delivered by Feb 05.

Hate to wait over a month for my iMac, but hopefully it'll be flawless!

The answer to your questions is NO!
I have 4 Apple computers (iMac G3, eMac , iBook, Mac Mini Intel), a Time Capsule, 3 iPods. All work perfectly & have since I got them. Obviously I bought them Used, except for my Mac Mini, iPods & Time Capsule, which were bought new. I do have a faulty keyboard & my Mighty Mouse's Scroll Wheel is a Problem & always has been. but that is the extent of my problems. Up until this iMac.
I feel confident, as long as I don't give up first , that Apple will resolve my problems.

ideesign...........I have been following the "yellowing" threads as well, although I do not post there.

Some of the comments are almost comical.

    One of my favorites......

    " I didn't know I had the yellowing until I ran the test".......DOH

Or, how many times has someone posted, "I ran the test and I think I have the yellowing, but not sure, how can you tell?"........double DOH

I think it was side burn that posted a few pages back that he had tested his new 26" vizio monitor, and guess what.........I think he's pi$$ed off at all of us now.

If you can't see it........is it really a defect?

I've been posting to the Yellow Tinge thread (but of course). But I knew I had it. You'd have to blind not to see it. The gray bar Test does the trick. Mine had Yellowing towards bottom. So the bottom gray bar looks lighter & more washed out looking compared to the top bar.

Yes Dino, that is the same answer that 99.9999999% of all Mac users will give.

Apple will resolve the issue, they always have in the past, and will likely continue to do so in the future.

You may possibly get another defective unit since you are only on your first, I think that would only be fair to those of us who have received a second defective unit, don't you? Just kidding.

I've personally worn out a boatload of keyboards, and never liked the mighty mouse with it's 2" long cable, but those components do have the most use and abuse, and will go bad, no matter how well made they are.

Even if your next one is bad, Apple will make it good, but I think right now, they have no way of tracking defective units, or defective components that are still in circulation, and resellers seem to be handing out a disproportionate number of defective units. Some may be restocking those units simply because they do not believe they are defective, and keeping them in circulation.

Good luck and let us know how the new unit is, good or bad. I will be getting a call from Apple, scheduled for the 18th, to arrange a replacement on mine, I'm not the least bit worried, or concerned about it.

    atlatnesiti.........

While I mostly agree with your sympathies, and you are correct that this is a minor issue, I cannot say that I agree with the way you express yourself.

You can see that now some are beginning to consider you a troll, even though you are a Mac user, and have been a member of these forums for a year and a half.

Please try and express yourself in a more positive manner. I also get frustrated with all of the negative criticism on this forum without the balancing positives.

Since you are one of the majority who has a perfect machine, please try and add to the positive side of the issue, and show the other posters that you have some credibility.

You obviously don't (or can't) read. I am a proud owner of iMac i7 - week 47 (arrived 2 months ago) and NO issues at all!
I have owned Macs since their beginning... Yes I am that old

    Hi pazuita,

I've a question to you, because you're the one with the numbers and the facts. Have you seen already posts from people having 01 or 02 iMachs. What did they report? Am I wrong, when I say, that we have not one negative report from them?

    Do they even exist???
