Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

I had a Week 45 21.5" Yellow Tinge & Screen Flicker. All else worked flawlessly, till the point that I actually miss it. I might have been able to live with Slight Yellow but Screen Flicker was unacceptable IMO.

I hate to say this but as expected, I don't think that site is accurate at all. I posted there & could not find my Post. When I went to search for my Particular Model having Yellow Screen, it came up with nothing. No units. I even used my screen name. I then searched for my exact model for Flicker & it still came up with nothing. Again No Units. I posted in both places, so why wouldn't at the very least my one iMac pop up. Makes no sense.

This *****, I had bought my i7 just after christmas after a number of assurances the software patch had fixed all...

Alas from Day 1 it has flickered and blacked out all over the place. Upon trying to return and exchange it, I am carefully advised that this may take months and that there is a waiting list of hundreds already in Hong Kong...

So now that I can't set this up as my permanent home computer, what am I supposed to do. My first Mac...was nearly converted...but now I'm forced to go back to PC. This *****.

Picked up my week 02 i7 2TB four days ago after ordering on New Years eve. Was told it could be a 3-4 week wait, which I didn't see as a problem as I read it as Apple trying to tighten up their quality control. Wasn't sure whether to be happy or not when it arrived after just 2 weeks.

After the apprehensive unpackaging (more like the delivery of a baby, I just wanted it to be healthy... not the usual joyful experience associated with an Apple product) and a few migration teething issues everything has been OK so far. No flickers or cracks, although sometimes I think I can see the slightest hint of yellow tinge on the bottom right hand corner of the screen, depending on the angle I view it at... or I could just be paranoid and imagining it. I'll keep my old 24" machine plugged in in the meantime.

What a shame the whole experience is slightly soured. Hope those of you with issues get sorted.

Just to add to my last post – I wasn't imagining it. There is a slight yellow tinge, and I mean VERY slight, to the point where it's hardly there. Out of curiosity I ran the screen test on my old 24" C2D too and that has an even worse yellow graduation on it, and I've lived with it for almost 3 years without complaint – but then I wasn't out looking for problems. I certainly won't be lugging this back to the shop for a niggle that's barely noticeable. As long as the flicker stays away, I'll be keeping this i7.

Hi everyone, I've been following these posts after I first discovered my FIRST iMac 27 i5 was flickering and causing me grief. This is now my 3rd iMac and I'm about to take this one back to get my 4th!...

The problem is, it's costing me £15 in petrol each time I take a trip to my local Apple store there and back, it's also my time I'm having to put into this, I desperately need this sorted ASAP as I use my mac for work everyday!

My latest and worst flicker was when I was just about to sign in to make a reply to this post, the screen blacked out, flickered, jumped and then the screen got stuck halfway.... Check it out!:http://www.luxdesigns.com/imac27.jpg

    So disappointed...

Wow. How is that effect even possible?

It's unbelievable to me that with images like that floating around, that the Mac blogs still refuse to cover this story. I mean, acrylic cracks in the G4 Cube and it's media wildfire... but legitimate technical problems and radio silence.

One thing I hadn't mentioned here is the high-pitched squeal coming out of the screen, because it went after a PRAM reset. But then today it came back! It's ear-splitting. Thankfully it only lasted for half an hour or so and went away again.

HI there, just to add another voice, to this issue. My 27inch imac is less than 48hrs out of the box and have exactly the same symptoms the flickering, distortion, blacking out and the weird shifting top scroll bar!

Tried installing the patch and was given the error message - "your computer does not need this update" - well I think it does!!! Has anyone else had a problem uploading the patch ???

My latest came with the patch as well. Basically all this means is that the patch didn't fix the problem, or created new ones.

    Hi sparkie1984,

it's unbelievable, I'm skocked ... in the last two pages of this thread we have three people reporting that they already have their third iMac.

Rob-2010, sparkie1984, UKOutpost ... could you please checkup if there is something near to your machine that could be the cause for an interference, a magnetic resonance or something like that?

Maybe the key to all this problems is, that the new iMac-screens are very sensitive to magnetic fields.

Maybe a stupid theory, but please help us to check it out.
    Thank you!
